RIP Red Auerbach
Just heard this on ESPN. Greatest coach in NBA history. Red Auerbach's Celtics revolutionized basketball and won championship after championship after championship, becoming one of the three or four greatest dynasties in sports history. I sure hope the NBA does something to honor him. I'm sure the Celtics will.

1. Another bummer
He was coach of the Celts in their dynasty years when I first followed the NBA.

2. He was an honorable man.
I also hope the NBA recognizes his outstanding influence.

4. A Stogie Salute to Red. Thanks for the memories (and championships)
Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 08:40 AM by SpiralHawk
I've been a fan since the days of Cooz, Hondo, Jungle Jim Luskatoff, and the Jones Boys. I even had Bill Russell in my cab one time, taking him on a short haul to Boston Garden (he was sullen and distinctly unfriendly, alas).

All the same, time to Light 'em up.

7. Celtics to wear black clover leaf in honor of Auerbach
<snip>

"The Boston Celtics will wear a black clover leaf on their uniforms for the upcoming season as a tribute to former coach and general manager Red Auerbach, who died Saturday of a heart attack at age 89.

The clover will appear on the right side of the jersey and will be inscribed with the word "Red" in green lettering.

The Celtics begin the season at home Wednesday against the New Orleans Hornets and are still formulating plans to honor Auerbach at the opener."

8. Season Dedicated
The Celtics will dedicate the entire season to Mr. Auerbach. Yes he seemed like a great coach and general manager. He has about sixteen championship rings all together as both a coach and general manager. So does anyone want to take a guess at why he was so great? Was it that he saw how simple the game was or was it something else?

9. P.W. Botha gets the gas face!
I can't help but notice how much Red Auerbach looked just like P.W. Botha! Has anyone ever seen those two in the same room together?!
