several stitches. The sportscasters were saying that because the game was on natural grass, the players would be wearing spikes and not rubber-soled shoes.

Reporter on the story (Peter King) said tonight that Haynesworth would probably receive a $25,000 fine and NO SUSPENSION AT ALL.

The offense was so bad that programs showing highlights don't seem to even want to give us a good look at the replay!

Apparently Titans' coach Fisher ran over to Parcells immediately after the game and told him if the League didn't punish Haynesworth sufficiently then he would.

I agree with Chris Collingsworth -- they should have dragged the bastard off in handcuffs for assault.

Update: Just read an article at ESPN site saying Haynesworth apologized, called his own act "disgusting," said he is "not a dirty player."

Gurode wasn't able to play the rest of the second half. Said he'd never had anything like that happen to him before or ever SEEN anything like that happen before to anyone!

I'm that's a little more than pocket change, even for a pro athelete, but for this kind of thing it seems awfully light.

And no suspension? He should be out for the rest of the season.

but King seemed to feel $25K was a "hefty fine," I think is how he put it.

Not hefty enough to suit me!

Did a bit of checking to get some background on the guy, and he's had at least one "incident" that spoke worlds to me. In May of this year he tried to run an old lady off the highway with his car. Haynesworth was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment. Don't know how it was adjudicated.

He was also apparently considered to be a "problem child" after the Titans drafted him in 2002 (1st round draft pick, 15th). His stats show him as 6'6" and 320 lbs. One report I read on the incident today said that Haynesworth actually kicked Gurode's helmet off in the first place before stomping him in the face -- twice. Gurode also said the two had NOT had any words on the field or anything like that preceding the incident.

I'm going to be following this latest story from today's game to see how the punishment is handled because this really is just over-the-top.

11. Even that seems light

I am old enough to remember when Juan Marichal took a baseball bat to John Roseboro. Marichal was fined $1750 (star baseball players made about $50K/yr in 1965) and suspended for 8 games.

This seems to go beyond that incident.

although I would not have argued if a tougher penalty was handed down. I think what helped him was that he seemed genuinely remorseful afterwards.

14. Marichal's punishment was much stronger then than it would be now

Five-man rotations are the order of the day now. In 1965, three-man rotations were the norm, especially down the stretch (the incident for which Marichal was punished occurred on August 22). In addition to the eight games, Marichal was not allowed to pitch in the two-game series against the Dodgers on Labor Day weekend.

The $1750 Marichal doesn't sound like much now, but at the time a star pitcher like Marichal would make about $50K/yr, not the multi-year/multi-million dollar contracts even mediocre players make now. At the start of the 1965 season, Willie Mays was the highest-paid player in baseball; he made $120K/yr; Micky Mantle was the only $100K player and Sandy Koufax would join them at the end of the 1965 season. If memory serves me correctly, Marichal's fine was the largest handed out to a baseball player to that date and the length of the suspension was also among the longest. Put together, this was considered the most severe penalty handed out to a player since the 1919 Black Sox scandal.

Marichal missed at least two, maybe three starts as a result of the punishment. The Giants finished two games behind the Dodgers.
