Yanks Break Ground on New Stadium (the House that George Built??)

NEW YORK - The New York Yankees and politicians broke ground Wednesday on a billion-dollar stadium project across the street from The House That Ruth Built.

In front of a huge rendering of the new Yankee Stadium, team owner George Steinbrenner, Gov. George Pataki, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others, some wearing Yankees hard hats, plunged shovels into some loosened dirt.

Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, superfan Billy Crystal and dozens of politicians and team officials watched from a small grandstand. Pataki said fans “will be entering an icon” when they come to Yankee games starting in 2009, just as he did when he first visited Yankee Stadium 50 years ago.

2. Oh Lord, I didn't know about this...

I'm not a Yankees fan in any way, shape or form, but this is tooo sad...

I've never been inside the place, but I did see the outside of it from the expressway from the Bronx to Kennedy Airport on a snowy Monday night in December 1981 and even though I'm a born and raised Chicagoan, just seeing the facade from the distance gave me the chills...

Well, maybe next baseball season I can get Mr. Wonderful to take me back to NYC, just to make a pilgrimage and see any ole baseball game in the "House that Ruth Built".

3. Are NY taxpayers paying for it?

I know that was the Guilani plan for the NYY and NYM stadia...

the yankees are paying for the building of the stadium. as are the mets for theirs

some infrastructure improvements (new metro north station, roadways) are being paid for by the city or the MTA, but they were supposed to have been done 30+ years ago when the stadium was renovated.

8. That's like FedEx Field for the 'Skins. Ravens stadium we taxpayers ...

were forced to pay for. An outrage.

AT LEAST baseball stadiums get usage <81 games a year> and generate an economy. Football stadiums lie fallow 355 days a year, plus or minus a few Bruce Springsteen concerts. A total WASTE of taxpayer dollars and welfare for the wealthy.
