What a dumbass name for a sports stadium
From today's Cincy Enquirer:

COLTS: The Indianapolis Colts announced Wednesday that Lucas Oil Products Inc. had won the right to name the team's new home field Lucas Oil Stadium.

Forrest Lucas hoped to keep a lid on the news that his California-based company had reached a 20-year sponsorship deal with the Colts worth $121.5 million. The deal includes the naming rights for the 63,000-seat, retractable-roof stadium, set to open in 2008.

What's next? Chicken Nuggets Arena? These name-for-sale stadiums are getting ridiculous.

1. Ohio State's basketball arena is called Value City Arena
It was announced just prior to a Michigan-Ohio State football game. So someone had a banner made that said 'Welcome Value City University' and had it flown over the stadium.

I agree, the corporate stadium names are out of control.

we call it the Schott, (since the building is the schottenstein center)

Though they hardly sponser anything... they just built the fucking place. I for one am VERY thankful that it didn't come out of my tuition

2. It should have been "Allied Van Lines Stadium"
or whoever those turkeys used to spirit the team's business papers out of Baltimore in the middle of the night, in defiance, I believe, of a court order.

6. This is so dumb.
Here the Yankees, Mets, and Giants-Jets are all building new stadiums
The Yankees are keeping the name Yankee stadium-good for them.
the Mets and Giants-Jets are selling their names-boo!
I had hoped that the new Giants Stadium would be called the "Wellington T. Mara Memorial Stadium"

7. The New York area teams are some of the last corporate hold-outs...
It just won't be the same when the Mets take the field in something other than Shea Stadium

My alma mater, The American University, once considered naming its new sports arena, The Adnan Khashoggi Center. Khashoggi is a Saudi Arabian arms dealer.

11. This makes me sick
With a name like Lucas Oil Stadium it makes Indianapolis look even more like the redneck capital of the Great lakes/Midwest Area!

15. Corporate branding all these stadiums makes me puke.
I hate it so much I can hardly stand it!! Can't we have a refuge from mass corporatization somewhere in our meagre little lives? Can't we have it when we go to the ballpark, or the basketball or hockey stadium? Give us a break, please! We promise, we'll still buy your shit, just give us a frickin' break.

17. They have never been anything but ridiculous
In San Francisco, the name of the home of the 49ers and former home of the Giants is still, by popular acclamation, Candlestick Park. Ok, officially it's something else, but nobody calls it that.

18. You know what gets me?
Considering how many cities (and their citizens) are being soaked by owners blackmailing these cities to build new stadiums, why aren't these sports temples simply named after the cities that REALLY build/support them?

19. Good point
S[ports fan that I am, I'd probably vote against a stadium proposal to build a ball park featuring suites that I can't afford.

20. I'm glad my baseball team plays in a 90+ year old stadium.
Wrigley Field... doh!

At least Mr. Wrigley owned the team.

I agree about the Poulan Weed-eater Bowl. After that stood without being laughed out of existence, the path was clear for corporate names for everything.
