3. Screw the Yankees. Go White Sox!
That being said, ARod is the MVP. He plays everyday, where Ortiz is a DH and that's it.

5. Its the MVP not the MVH....
And for those deciding that this last series was the deciding factor, in the first two games that actually mattered.

AROD - 4-8, 1 BB, 3 runs, 1 rbi, 1 SB, 1 E in the field (breaking a 61 game consecutive errorless streak)

Big Sloppy - 2-6, 2 BB, 1 runs, 1 rbi.

With the 3rd game added:

AROD - 4-11...everything the same

Big Sloppy - 3-8, 4BB, 2 runs, 2 rbis. (Congrats to Sloppy who got his avg above .300).

7. If Arod is shown with a purse....
...all is fair.

And while I may refer to him as Big Sloppy, I have a great deal of respect for him as a hitter.

9. One could say the same thing about the nickname.
Both of these men make tons of money to be public figures anyway, so they should be fair game for even childish mocking.

10. A-Rod
and it shouldn't be close. By all the stats that measure true value, he's better. Obp, ops, eqa, rc/27. NOt to mention great defense and 20 stolen bases.

11. David Ortiz. Period.
The MVP is the Most VALUABLE PLAYER TO THE TEAM, not the highest paid jamoke. Ortiz has come up with more big hits than I can shake a stick at. Big Papi is MVP in a landslide because he is far more valuable to the Red Sox than PayRod is to the Yankees.

15. wow
just wow. A-Rod produces more runs than any player in the game. He's extremely clutch, he gets on base more and he is an excellent defensive player. He is a more valuable player in every sense of the word. Just because he makes more money than Ortiz doesn't mean he's less valuable. A-Rod is the best player in baseball.

12. A-Rod.
He plays the field. Hits. Runs. Scores. Catches. Throws. Steals bases. Hit home runs, single, doubles. He plays the field.

13. that's a vaLid arguement
but i'd stiLL pick ortiz, and here's why: he's won so many games for the sox; not just the waLkoff hits, but cLutch hits to either tie the game or put the sox ahead (especiaLLy post-7th inning).

at the same time, i don't foLLow the yanks Like the sox, so i'm not up to speed on how much a-rod means to the yanks in game winning/changing hits.

14. That would be my only arguement FOR
BIG PAPI. He's won/tied more games for the Sox than A-Rod had.
But I still feel the player that wins MVP should be someone other than a DH. A-Rod is Gold Glove material and can hit the ball out of the park, drive in runs, steal bases, etc.

In should work that way in all sports.
I never saw a place kicker win MVP in the NFL no matter how many game-winning PATs of FGs they've made.

16. true but...
that was the argument when pedro missed out on the MVP by 2 votes (or whatever the finaL taLLy was) when 2 voters stated they wouLdn't vote for a pitcher for MVP.

i feLt he deserved it that year, and my bitterness aside as a sox fan, i think ortiz is more vaLuabLe based on win/tied more games. the sox wouLdn't be in the pLayoffs (incLuding the cLeveLand coLLapse) otherwise (as the subjective argument goes).

i doubt young of the texas rangers is getting as much consideration.

i do think the pLayoffs wiLL infLuence the votes, as they seem to do most years.

-----------------------

on a somewhat reLated note... i hope dontreLLe wiLLis gets consideration for both MVP and cy young award.

17. I thought they voted before
the playoffs. I could be wrong.

I would vote for a pitcher for MVP only if he was amazing, record-setting, 28-1, 0.55, 350 Ks. They have the CY, they don't need to be greedy.

Sorry-I'm still pissed that the Rocket beat Donnie Baseball for the MVP in 1986. I was only 8 but I still remember.

the voting takes pLace during of the WS?

the pLayoffs, aren't supposed to infLuence the vote, but if a pLayer goes on a tear that continues in the post season (and most LikeLy contributes in his team's advance) i can't imagin every voter having the wiLL to ignore that (if my memory of voting time is accurate).

i seem to recaLL some shocks on a few occasions, guerrero being the most recent, that may have gotten a boost. not that he didn't deserve it, but i assumed at Least 1/2 pLayers were considered ahead of him, near the end of that season. i agree he deserved the award based on that end of the year run (incLuding pLayoffs), but i was stiLL surprised based on many a year's winner.
i was stunned when mo vaughn won the award but that was for different reasons

20. Actually its fairly close....
Arod had one less HR that tied the game or put the Sox in the lead this year. papi has 3 walkoffs, I don't think Arod had any. Where Papi goes beserk is indeed the 7th inning on, he's slugging over .700.

22. A-Rod, but not by much
His offense was slightly better, I think, and the defensive value makes him the relatively clear #1.

24. A poll for haters...
that allow their collective hate for the Yankees to drive them to vote a DH as MVP.

How many DHs have been voted MVP? 0 (that's zero).

The 'P' in MVP stands for PLAYER, not hitter.

Still, it's fun to watch the mental masturbation.

25. But isn't it for the most valuable to his TEAM?
The award is to "...recognize the one player in the league who has contributed the most to the success of the player's team."

Which is why a relief pitcher has won this award in the past.

If the player who has made the biggest contribution to his team is a DH why not recognize that? I think the MVP should contribute more than just on the field, too. I think voters look at how a player works with the team and the leadership qualities he shows.

In any case, we'll know shortly.
