Pujols with Angels
Edited on Thu Dec-08-11 10:23 AM by JonLP24
Sources: Albert Pujols, Angels agree

DALLAS -- Albert Pujols has agreed to a 10-year, $250 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Thursday.

The deal includes a full no-trade clause, which Pujols had been seeking and may have been a sticking point in his negotiations with the Miami Marlins.

Pujols had turned down an offer from the Cardinals, the only team he has ever played for, about a year ago, but St. Louis was still in the bidding as of Wednesday.

2. I admit that I really wanted to see Pujols in a Marlins uniform
but damn, I am so incredibly happy that the Marlins aren't the ones having to pay a 40 year old $25 million.

8. Even Better
The Marlins offered him $275 Million
http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/12/08/marlins-final-offer-to-albert-pujols-was-10-years-210-million/

Can I ask?? What the heck were they thinking??

Oh yeah and I'm glad we got Buehrle and Reyes. I think the Marlins will be just fine with a very potent lineup :)

10. I don't believe that...
Edited on Thu Dec-08-11 03:42 PM by trumad
I've followed this from the beginning...

and if the Marlins offered 25 mill more than the Angels, he would have gone to the Marlins.

The most they offered was the 210.

And CJ Wilson turned down more money to play for the Angles (LOL)

12. A potent lineup?
The Marlins were 23rd in runs last year with 625, and they hit 22nd in the league with a .247 average. Only Stanton and Morrison hit more than 20 HR's and no one drove in 100 runs or hit .300. The Marlins are a young team, so there should be some improvement, but I'm not sure the lineup falls in the "very potent" category even if they can keep Reyes and Ramirez healthy. I think they're going to need to add more bats to contend in the NL EAST, but they certainly have the incentive to spend some more money, and I expect they will.

13. Uh, he's not the person to ask, because he's in on it. In fact, they just signed a new
five year deal, so none of this is going away anytime soon. This sport is shooting itself in the foot by not doing real revenue sharing with hard salary caps and hard salary floors. On opening day more than half of the teams know they will not be going to the playoffs.

16. Is the plan to down-size MLB through attrition?
Because this is a great way to kill small market teams or those in depressed areas.

14. Pujols will be 42 by the time this 10 year contract ends..
even as a DH, I doubt very seriously he'll remain anywhere near productive enough to justify a contract of this size..

15. 10 years is too long.
He's worth money, no doubt. I just don't know why anyone would sign him for 10 years.
