Nationals exercise option on Johnson
he Washington Nationals announced on Monday they have exercised Davey Johnson's managerial option for the 2012 season. Nationals executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Johnson will continue the on-field efforts he began on June 27, when he assumed the Nationals' managerial helm.

"After a series of discussions, it became obvious that the Nationals would be best served if Davey Johnson would continue as manager," Rizzo said. "Davey's remarkable connection to the clubhouse and D.C. community during the season's final three months was well received. His baseball acumen coupled with a proper offseason of planning, including a full regiment of Spring Training, should put our players in a position to succeed in 2012."

I'm okay with this because the Nats were playing as good as anyone in September, including helping the Braves out of the playoffs.
Johnson has said his goal for 2012 is to win the NL pennent. Here's hoping Davey!:toast:

3. Red Sox Pick Up Option on Scutaro
Update: The Red Sox have picked up the $6 million option on Scutaro’s contract, the Boston Herald reports.

Recommendation: With Scutaro’s buyout at $1.5 million, the true cost of the option for the Red Sox was $4.5 million. Given Scutaro’s presence as a defensive shortstop with a pulse at the plate (.781 OPS) —something that really didn’t exist in either the American League or the National League last season—it was a no-brainer to keep Scutaro around, even at 36 years old.
