What the heck is wrong with Serena Williams?
Is it just impossible for her to exhibit sportsmanship?

3. She's in the finals at the U.S. Open
She let out a huge intimidating scream in the middle of a point and the umpire penalized her a point, so she got all angry, accused the umpire of being a hater and ugly inside.

It's on CBS right now.

The announcers said that it was the right call, though McEnroe seems to be more sympathetic to Serena than most.

I've never once seen Serena compliment an opponent when she wins (except maybe Venus)and if Stosur wins this, I don't expect it to be any different.

34. LisaM - image what it must feel like to be an American champion, and have the Americans cheer for
the "foreigner". All the time. Since the beginning (it's not just an underdog thing).

Imagine being under intense scrutiny and criticism since you came into the game - because you learned tennis on the courts of Compton and didn't take the traditional route to success on the circuit.

Imagine being relegated - along with your sister - consistently to the outer courts at Wimbledon.

Imagine the calls going against you so often - phantom points awarded to Henin - footfaults called out of nowhere in a critical point in a match against Clijsters.

Imagine a few posters making comments like yours insisting you've "never once seen Serena compliment an opponent"- when I, and millions of others have - but some just can't seem to remember.

Imagine being accused of "thuggish" behavior.

Imagine what it's like to be a poor black girl, who grows up to become a strong, talented force in a "country club" sport.

I don't condone what Serena did. But I've watched her contain her frustrations and overcome obstacles (life-threatening health situation) to find grace, and even a smile, when many others might not have. Oh, I wish she could "wear the mask" to perfection, but alas, she cannot.

But take a moment to think about what is in heart. And perhaps, in yours.

12. I Just Posted At The Other Thread... She Deserves The Win! Serena Beat
herself and I really think I'm happy about it. Never thought it was going to happen, but Serena has been such a bad loser these days.

Way to go SAM!

Would love to see NOLE tomorrow, but doubts creeping in... he's won so much & I feel he may not make it. But, I won't cry buckets. Still, just one more NOLE!

Mentally he doesn't have it anymore...he can beat Djoker and the rest, but he can't put a full 2-week tournament together...anyway, I think Djoker will win.

20. Fingers Crossed... I Have A Feeling In My Gut... But He Was OUT Of It
yesterday and came roaring back. Two times? He's been really great, but there does come a time. I DON'T like the feeling I'm having. Rafa is looking better these days, or Andy M. just looked awful. I've seen Murray a lot better I know, but Rafa looked ...fresh... or something.

AND he really, really wants it! Fingers still crossed. Just one more this year and then he can let it go. Not that N. will, but losing this one could be a clincher. People just don't roll on and on like he's done. They play so much harder now and the body takes a real beating.

Again, fingers crossed.

Glad Stoser won though, and I know I'm an American, but didn't like how Serena acted. Not the first time I've seen her that rough. I wonder how she really is behind the scenes.

It would be something if The Djoker wins...

7. I really hate her
I don't care how good she can be; she is just a classless, clueless, entitled wretch. How could she possibly think she's allowed to yell out during a point and not receive a penalty? How can Carillo and JMac attempt to excuse it? And the crowd, too? They're all just gross.

17. Serena's got a thug mentality and occasionally it slips out
The hilarious aspect is when she tries to act sweet in post match TV interviews, and can't threaten to pull it off.

I only wish it happened against Clijsters again. The Williams clan despises the two Belgians. Serena gave Stosur a little bit of credit tonight. When Clijsters dumped her out of three straight majors a few years ago Serena was 100% filth in the media room all three times, claiming Clijsters was "lucky."

Serena is so brain warped no doubt she'll again conclude this makes her more popular, since the crowd briefly was on her side. Earlier in the tournament when asked about the 2009 tirade she said she barely remembered anything except people told her how great she handled it. Yeah, "if I ***ing could I'd shove this ball down your ***ing throat" is nothing but class.

BTW, Serena was a 6/1 favorite. Nice choke. I was happy she had to get past someone with a big weapon, unlike patty cake Wozniacki.

Clijsters has got to be sick at her bad fortune this year after the tumble in the high heels, which essentially ended her season. Otherwise these majors were waiting for her.

21. No shit, ever hear the phrase "thug mentality" used to describe
McEnroe and Connors? When they behaved in that fashion they were considered "colorful", "fiery" players who "competed hard for every point".

Not that I condone Serena's actions, but I get annoyed by this double standard.

41. McEnroe and Connors were "colorful"?
Their play was outstanding. Their tirades were disgraceful, an embarrasment, disrespectful of everyone but themselves. Serena is shy and meek compared to those clowns.

They were never known as shining examples of sportsmanship.

42. McEnroe was an especial asshole...his tantrums were part of his game plan...
He got thrown out of the Aussie Open one year for his third penalty point...the rules the year before were you could get 3 then thrown out on your fourth, and he thought the old rules applied, so he was going to push it to the max. What a four-alarm asshole.

43. Thug mentality is appropriate, and I'll stick with it
Mary Carillo yesterday described Serena as a bully who acted like an ass-clown on the court on Sunday. I guarantee she'd like to go further.

Connors is the only one who threatened Serena's level. There was a finger pointing mean spirited tone to his tirades, an indication that he'd hold a grudge and take it personally. McEnroe and particularly Nastase threw juvenile tantrums that were short lived and almost comical. They'd play to the crowd afterwards. Nastase even got down on his knees and stuck his face in the new Cyclops line calling machine at Wimbledon. Those two certainly didn't make a habit of condemning and threatening remarks like Serena specializes in:

* "I despise you"
* "I hate you"
* "You're a hater"
* "You're a loser"
* "If you see me walking down the hall..."
* "You are ugly on the inside"
* "If I could I'd take this ***ing ball and shove it down your ***ing throat"

And she's such a patriot that she hasn't played on the Fed Cup team since 2007--and, in her entire career, has only played 4 singles matches for her country's team. And she's agreed to play next year because, and only because, she wants to play in the Olympics.

She's also such a patriot that she told the umpire who correctly took away a point today: "Don't even look at me. If I see you in the corridor don't even walk past me because you're out of control, you're out of control. You're totally out of control, you're a hater and you're just unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing? And I never complain. Wow. <Serena's lack of self-awareness is stunning> You're a loser. I get a code violation for expressing who I am, we're in America last time I checked. Am I going to get violated for (asking for) water? Really don't look at me. I promise you don't look at me. Don't look my way."

A beautiful lover of her country, persecuted on the 10th Anniversary of September 11! In the NYC suburbs, no less!

39. I wasn't rooting for Australia. I was rooting for Sam Stosur.
I don't root for players based on their nationality unless I'm watching Davis or Fed Cup. I have never liked Serena and have never rooted for her. I always root for her opponent, regardless of where or when she plays.

I would never cheer for someone just because they are an American playing in NYC on 9-11-11. :wtf:

Maybe you'd have been happier if Stosur had withdrawn and let Serena win the tournament being that the final was being played in NYC on 9-11. How professional. :eyes:
