Complete silence from our resident, Upton, 49er fan about the gun thugs
who call themselves 49er and "football" fans. Hopefully he was not the one involved in this nonsense.

1. I wonder if the NFL -- or certain teams -- will eventually ban alcohol
in the parking lots.

2. He sure was chirping about the Dodgers having to pay for Stowe's injury.
I guess now he needs to chirp about the Niners paying the victims for their injuries.

Candlestick---home of the Latte Gangsters.

3. Some perspective
http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_18734376

Still, authorities suggested that at least one of the shootings may have been gang-related. Meanwhile, a source familiar with stadium security said Monday that the bathroom beating erupted when a fan punched a man who was guarding a men's bathroom stall for his sister, who wanted to avoid a long line for the women's restroom.

The 'Stick sits right smack in the middle of what may be broadly described as gang turf.

Meanwhile, down at the other end of 101...

Saturday's violence has raised new concerns in Santa Clara, where the 49ers are planning a new $987 million stadium. The city says the team had agreed two years ago to spend $1.7 million annually to maintain public safety during games. The stadium, scheduled to open in 2015, would include jail-like holding cells, an internal police squad and fiber-optic safety technology.

Brings back memories of Section 700 and Eagles Court at the Vet!

5. Doesn't speak very highly of the security at the stadium, does it? Same complaint
that was leveled against the Dodgers earlier this year by some Frisco fans.

What do we hear now?

** crickets **

4. Swift response from the 49ers:
S.F. CHRONICLE / August 23, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers said Monday that they want a halt to the team's annual preseason matchup against the Oakland Raiders after a violence-marred exhibition game at Candlestick Park in which two fans were shot, one was beaten into unconsciousness, 12 were arrested and dozens more ejected.

The team reacted to Saturday night's alcohol-fueled mayhem by cutting the hours the stadium parking lot will be open before games, eliminating tailgating altogether after the kickoff and promising to punish season-ticket holders who sell their seats to troublemakers. Police said they would set up drunken-driving checkpoints around Candlestick and vigorously enforce laws against open alcohol containers on city streets.

SNIP

York said the team has asked the National Football League to stop scheduling the Raiders during the exhibition season, which would end a tradition that dates from 1967. York said he wanted to see the matchup postponed "for some period of time," but did not specify how long.

6. To add: 49ers to ban tailgating after game starts following exhibition violence
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- After violence marred a weekend preseason game against the archrival Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers on Monday moved to strengthen security at home games, including banning tailgating after kickoff and warning fans that rowdy behavior won't be tolerated.

In addition, 49ers CEO Jed York said he will recommend that the NFL call off the annual preseason battle between the Niners and Raiders indefinitely.

"This is a game where you have a rivalry situation and, unfortunately you have the worst segment from a very small segment of both fan bases that come and brings about this type of event," York said at a news conference at Candlestick Park. "It's our belief that we should recommend to the NFL that this game is at least postponed for some period of time."

York later said, "It's unfortunate."

9. Um, the matchup will take place, in the regular season, once every four years
whether York likes it or not. Every four years, the NFC West plays its interconference games against the AFC West.

not thugs who picked up a cheap pre-season ticket.

12. It stinks that they will stop playing the game.
The game and the rivalry are not the cause of the shootings. I'm a Giants fan and it would stink if they unscheduled the Jets over something like this.

14. Maybe they could play it in L.A. or even Hawai'i
an L.A. preseason game would be a nice showcase for the league there. Meanwhile, Hawai'i has TV affiliates for both teams. I used to click back and forth between the two stations, depending on who had the ball.

But not a peep about this.
