Is OU the new BCS National Champion?
For 2005? We'll know soon.

USC stripped of 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy
Aug 26, 5:48 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Southern California has been stripped of the 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, which is awarded by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’s top college football team.

The organization said Thursday that a committee of current and former officers voted to revoke the honor after USC was penalized for NCAA violations. It did not award the trophy to another school.

In June, USC received a two-year bowl ban, four years’ probation, loss of scholarships and forfeits of an entire year’s games. The punishment was for improper benefits to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush dating to the Trojans’ 2004 national championship.

The BCS has said it will likely force USC to vacate its title but won’t act until the NCAA hears the Trojans’ appeal.

USC said it is in the process of returning the Grantland Rice Trophy.

“Due to the NCAA penalties, we understand the actions taken by the Football Writers Association of America, and we will abide by that ruling,” new USC athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement.

2. And we don't want it.
We got our asses kicked. We don't want, nor deserve, the national title. That's pretty much the consensus around Norman.

4. What about Auburn?
The final 2004 Grantland Rice Poll had USC ranked No. 1, followed by undefeated Auburn (13-0) and Oklahoma (12-1), which lost to USC in the title game.

Actually, it will probably be left vacated...as it should be.

8. Football Writers Association of America
and it's not just them who had Auburn second in 2004, every final major poll did. So, if awarded, the 2004 championship should go to Auburn.

9. If the only reason Auburn finished ahead of OU was that OU
had 1 loss (to the team that is vacating the title for breaking the rules), then I'm not sure Auburn is deserving either. Best to leave it un-awarded. USC F'd it up for everyone.

Oregon finished the regular season 10-1, ranked #5 their only loss was to USC.

As happens repeatedly, they were disrespected and sent to the Holiday Bowl (despite having a superior record than Ohio State at 10-2).

Instead of a BCS game, they were assigned to the 2005 Holiday Bowl versus the Oklahoma Sooners. Playing without their starting quarterback, Kellen Clemens, and combined with a strong showing from the Sooners, the Ducks fell in a close game, 17-14.

The Sooners were subsequently required to vacate their 2005 season, including the Holiday Bowl win, after their starting quarterback and an offensive lineman were found to be in violation of NCAA rules.

:P
