USC reportedly getting 2-year post-season ban
http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/06/09/report-two-season-post-season-ban-for-usc/

It was leaked earlier today that the final report on the NCAA's investigation into the USC football and basketball programs would be released on Thursday. Ahead of that semi-scheduled release -- which will not include a press conference on the part of the Trojans as previously thought -- comes word of potential sanctions facing the football program. And unlike some -- including us -- had previously thought, it will not exactly be a slap on the wrist for the storied institution.

According to Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com, USC will receive a two-year post-season ban from the NCAA's probe into, among other things, the alleged illegal benefits received by Reggie Bush while he was a Heisman-winning running back at USC.

Additionally, per Feldman, the program will be hit with a loss of scholarships, the amount of which is not yet known. There's no word on additional sanctions that could be slapped on the university; however, if Bush were to be declared retroactively ineligible, it could lead to USC being stripped of their 2004 BcS title, a previously-unknown stipulation implemented by the governing body of Div. 1-A football titles after the NCAA's probe into Bush commenced.

Needless to say, the fallout will continue throughout the day Thursday and, possibly, well into the future.

UPDATE 12:31 a.m. ET: According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the USC football program will lose "more than 20... scholarships" as part of the sanctions handed down by the NCAA. There is no word on over how many years that scholarship loss would be spread out.

"Limited recruiting contacts, probation and forfeiture of victories are also among the penalties" that are in play for the football program, the Times reports.

I wish it were the kiss of death for the program, but still, this is good news.

1. Whatever..
the remaining teams in the Pac-10 or Pac-16 will just have to step up and defend the conference's pride in the post season without them..Shouldn't be much of a problem, and then it a couple years USC will be back with a vengeance..

Now it looks like a good move for Steve Sarkasian to have come to UW..

4. With this news
I'm sure Vontaze Burfict is even more happy that he chose Arizona State over USC. However, they will still be a big time spoiler for programs that have a shot at the conference title.

7. U.S.C. Receives Two-Year Ban and Loses Title
<snip>

"The National Collegiate Athletic Association severely penalized the University of Southern California on Thursday, barring its football team from bowl games for two years and ordering it to vacate its 2004 national championship, citing major violations by the football and men’s basketball programs. The harshest penalties stem from improper benefits given to the Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and the basketball player O. J. Mayo, which the N.C.A.A committee on infractions said struck at the heart of the association’s amateurism principle.

The N.C.A.A. barred the football program from bowl games for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, forced it to vacate all victories in which Bush participated beginning in December 2004 — including the Orange Bowl victory that produced the Trojans’ Bowl Championship Series title in January 2005 — and docked the Trojans 10 scholarships in each of the next three seasons. The university was cited for lack of institutional control.

The announcement was made in a news conference by the committee chairman, Paul Dee of the University of Miami, and the report was made available on the N.C.A.A. Web site.

These were the stiffest penalties given to any university since the N.C.A.A. issued the “death penalty” to the Southern Methodist football program in 1986, shutting it down for two years."

8. Reggie Bush was a crook...and they looked the other way...
...really harsh, but deserved. Wonder if they take away his Heisman?

17. I believe so
Took away his Heisman. The BCS is waiting for the appeal process to complete before they take away the National Championship.

The way I feel about this... when you have about 70 scholarship players, it's hard to keep track especially when off campus agents approach these athletes. It's still USC responsibilities but Reggie Bush will not punished except for the Heisman(which is huge) but this affects all the athletes that did nothing wrong that will have their wins taken away from them.

Not disagreeing with you if that's what you think. I do agree it is deserved if USC doesn't have a successful appeal.

9. FYI- USC led to the integration of football in the SEC
when USC came to Alabama in 1970 and squashed Alabama Bear Bryant was able to convince the administration that he needed black players in order to compete. Alabama was an all white team.

On September 12, 1970, USC opened the season visiting the University of Alabama under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and became the first fully integrated team to play in the state of Alabama.<5> The game, scheduled by Bryant, resulted in a dominating 42-21 win by the Trojans. More importantly, all six touchdowns scored by USC team were by African American players, two by USC running back Sam "Bam" Cunningham, against an all-white Crimson Tide team.<6> After the game, Bryant was able to persuade the university to allow African American players to play, hastening the racial integration of football at Alabama and in the South.<5><7>

supposedly Bear Bryant said - " we need some of them"

Some naive people think that college sports is about "student athletes". It's a profession and the minor leagues for the NFL and the NBA.

NCAA thinks it's about student athletes while making millions of dollars for them and the schools. These NCAA administrators are living high off the hog off of these`kids.

12. College Sports Took A Lot Longer To Integrate
Even into the 1980s. G'Town's basketball team and the Miami Hurricanes football teams stood out because they were mostly black.

Today, it's common place.

Playing in L.A. gives them advantages that most college programs cannot even begin to offer.
