Dallas Braden with the Oakland A's just threw a perfect game vs the Rays...
Everybody up and everybody down with six strikeouts thrown in for good measure.
The RAYS are red hot but not this afternoon.

PERFECT.

2. Too bad only 12,228 were there to see it..
but the Bay Area is Giants country..

Also, first time in mlb history that perfect games have been thrown in successive years against the same team.

Congratulations Tampa Bay!!

8. Doubt it..
Oakland is 28th in mlb in attendance...averaging but 16,653 per game.

My favorite American League team!!!!!

15 minutes of fame? Fuck you Stray-Roid. Dallas sure showed you.

4. I saw on ESPN that he lost his mother to melanoma when he was in high school.
A touching tribute and a day he will always remember. Congratulations to Dallas Braden.

6. Sorry, they dropped the "Devil" from the "Devil" Rays
It is FUNDY Florida after all and we can't have any demonic influences with our baseball team.
So, they are just the RAYS.

14. I never understood that anyway
I mean, we know what a ray is. It swims in the water. What the heck is a "devil ray"? A ray with a bad temper? One that escaped from hell's aquarium? Doesn't make much sense. I think it would have been better to just go with "Rays" from the start.

9. Congratulations to him--below is an excerpt from CBS sports.com

Braden's teammates mobbed him when the Mother's Day masterpiece was over, leaving bats and gloves scattered on the field. The left-hander pointed to the sky in honor of his mom, Jodie Atwood, who died of cancer when he was a high school senior. He shared a long and tearful hug with his grandma, Peggy Lindsey, the woman who raised him, in front of the dugout.

"It hasn't been a joyous day for me in a while," Braden said. "With my Grandma in the stands it makes it a lot better."

10. Where are the number crunchers among us?
What percentage of all MLB games ever played does the 19 perfectos make up?
It's gotta be like 1/10 of 1 percent..............(just a SWAG)

13. more like 1/10000th of a percent
if you figure there are 5184 games played every year for 100 plus years, those 19 games make up the tiniest of fractions.

23. Holy crap!
That's what I like about baseball,it's got all these cool things that happen like once every lifetime.
Figure 5184 games times 110 years (modern era) you get 570,240 total games.
570 would be .05% of that number so you are right on target :toast:
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19. Wasn't that the best US Senator ever to pitch two no-hitters in the major leagues?
Well, you can't that that distinction away from him.

20. Some things never change...
In the ninth inning, (The Asshole) called his catcher, Gus Triandos, to the mound. What did they talk about? Triandos stated after the game, "He said I should tell him a joke, just to get a breather. I couldn't think of anything. I just laughed at him."

They're STILL laughing at him.

Just clicked the link and it takes you to the final pitch and the aftermath including the emotional scene with his grandmother, but on the same page, there's a place to click on the interview...just thought it was very cool that she had those earrings on, nice to see that.

yay grandma and what a wonderful, if bittersweet story on Mother's Day.

24. It was a great performance
and the scene afterwards with Dallas hugging his sobbing Grandma was perfect for this Mother's Day. I figured the A's would do better this year but their pitching has been a nice surprise. Congrats to Braden.

Not a bad sports weekend for me. First the Sharks eliminate the Red Wings in 5, then this perfect game AND the Dodgers hand Ubaldo Jimenez his first loss of the season. I'll be in a good mood at work tomorrow.
