Crosby wins it in overtime
Source: Detroit Free Press

Sidney Crosby scored in overtime to lift Canada to the Olympic gold medal over Team USA, 3-2, today in Vancouver.

Crosby took the pass from the left corner from Jerome Ignila and beat Ryan Miller through his legs for the game-winner at 7:40 of the extra period.

Zach Parise scored with 24.4 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Roberto Luongo made 31 saves for Canada. Ryan Miller (Michigan State) had 33 stops for USA.

Jonathan Toews opened the scoring for Canada in the first period. Corey Perry made it 2-0 before Ryan Kesler (Livonia) scored for the U.S. in the second.

Ryan Miller was extra special. A great Spartan. And congrats to the ultimate Captain, Steve Yzerman.

He won the Stanley Cup and the Gold Medal in less than 12 months..... just a kid from small town of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.

What a dream come true!

Congratulations to him and his family.

I think it's great that both Canadian hockey teams won the gold, at home! Also, loved how, during the medal ceremony, the crowd cheered for the Americans, who play on Canadian professional teams.

The Soviet Union and it's satellites ruined that spirit with their quasi-professional "amateurs". After decades of the charade, the IOC finally allowed the west to let their professionals play too.
So, I agree that this is not "the true Olympic spirit" but it was far better to watch several evenly matched, quality teams compete and culminate in a truly exemplary exhibition rather than the lopsided, one sided poor excuse for a hockey games that we saw in "the true Olympic spirit".

edited to add an "s" to game and correct punctuation.

Brazil lacks a gold medal in football (soccer) precisely for that reason. We should hava had the opportunity to put the likes of Pelé and Garrincha and Leonidas and Zico and etc etc etc. on the field.

We even managed to get into a final against the USSR in 1988, and lost. Oh, and another against France in 1984 when the Soviet bloc boycotted. Before that -- nada, zip, niente.

And there's a place for that kind of purity--on the neighborhood basketball court or soccer field, or in your local American Legion baseball league, or in high school or college sports (although the distinction between pros and elite college athletes is eroding fast). If we're going to tout the Olympics as the world's greatest athletes competing on a global stage, then it's silly to exclude the people who are actually the best in the world at what they do. If we're going to claim that it's all about the purity of the sporting spirit, or whatever, and exclude people who in their real lives get paid to be athletes, thanks but no thanks--my wife's got some shelves she'd like me to put up, and that's probably a better use of my time.

And you really shouldn't sink to personal attacks here. It's frowned on.

And yep, they get paid a lot of money. Because they're really good at what they do. So what? And if they didn't get paid a lot, the owners would. Isn't that what unions are all about?

Which is what I said. I also think that the last minute decision to allow the game to be played on a NHL sized surface (instead of the Olympic sized surface) privileged the Canadian style of play over that of some of the other teams in the tourney--notably the Russians.

53. it wasn't a last minute decision to play on an NHL sized rink
That decision was announced in 2006. And the Russians defeated the Canadians in the IIHF World Championships in 2008 on an NHL-sized rink.

54. It was a decision made AFTER Vancouver got the games.
At any rate, there's no question in my mind that the smaller ice was an advantage for Canada, particularly as against euro-heavy teams like Russia. As was the NHL style officiating.

and if playing on an NHL size rink was such an advantage for Canada, how did they manage to lose to the Russians in 2008 on an NHL rink in Canada with a team with twice as many NHL players as the Russians.

And NHL officials have been officiating in the Olympics for many many years (and the rules were still Olympic rules, not NHL rules)

http://www.iihf.com/channels10/olympics-2010/news/news-singleview-world-championship-2009/browse/10/article/rink-size-doesnt-matter.html?tx_ttnews=3468&cHash=8646446160

56. Some two years AFTER Vancouver's proposals to the IOC were accepted. How's that?
Edited on Mon Mar-01-10 03:07 PM by Romulox
And Canadians would've complained bitterly if the game had been Canada vs. Russia with 3 out of the 4 officials being Russian.

And you know that they would. :hi:

Edit: and just so we are clear, there is no question in my mind that NHL officiating is corrupt; if you're looking for a concrete example, I'll give you two: Gary Bettman's "on the fly" change of the crease rule in the 1999 SCF, and Gary Bettman's "on the fly" change of the instigator rule in last year's Stanley Cup Finals.

So this may be not much more than a variant of the "lie down with dogs" syndrome.

having a more balanced officiating crew (like the 2 Canadian/2 US) crew that officiated the first Canada/US match would have been much better.

But as far as the rink size making a difference, you're barking up the wrong tree. The agreement to use the NHL dimensions was announced in June 2006. Four years is a long time, not a last minute decision. And I'm still wondering how the Russians managed to defeat the Canadians on NHL-sized in 2008. And how the Americans managed to finish sixth (behind Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic).

58. It's the totality of circumstances--Canadian rink size, Canadian officials, NHL in charge of tourney
after the NHL has bent over backwards to promote Sidney Crosby. It just stinks.

And the NHL style game is boring to watch. If you know anything about hockey you'll recognize that Team Canada played 40 minutes or more of the trap last night. It's a valid style of play (in the NHL), but it's usually reserved for low skill teams like the Calgary Flames teams of the early '00s--in other words, it's beneath Team Canada!

If the rules allow the Gold Medal winner to trap their way to victory, the rules should be changed. And a huge factor that contributes to the viability of the trap is the NHL sized rink... :hi:

59. but in the gold medal game it was basically two NHL teams playing each other
So in that game there was no advantage from the rink or the style of play. As far as having Canadian refs on the ice, I have agreed with you that from an appearance standpoint that was a lapse. However, from the standpoint of the actual contest, I didn't see any evidence that the officiating impacted the outcome.

60. I think you've been itching to argue a different point than the one I wanted to make...
I don't begrudge the Canadians their gold. I just wish the Gold Medal Game had been more interesting.
