3. yes and yes
he's an amazing athlete and he has incredible guts.

watched him in the xgames a couple of weeks back, he took a terrible fall in a practice run where he hit his chin on the edge of the pipe so hard his helmet flew off. he then went on to win later that same day and today he won gold again.

4. Does Shaun ever compete in the snowboard cross?
I'm afraid I don't know much about snowboarding, and saw the Olympic Snowboard Cross Country
and loved it, first time I have seen it.

5. I've been aware of "The Flying Tomato" since he was 14.
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 08:47 AM by rocktivity
After everybody else crashed, he decided not to uncork his trademark invert until his second run--causing the announcer to describe his first run as "conservative." His second run turned out to be a victory lap!
:applause:

P.S. I'm feeling a little guilty about the pleasure I'm still getting from the Looney Tunes pratfall those two Koreans speed skaters took trying to cut off Apollo Ohno!

8. You realize Ohno was absolutely going to finish 4th...
and the Koreans took each other out in a battle for the silver, right?

Here's the separation when the Korean skaters went down. There's no way Ohno makes up a 4m gap in the last corner.

Ohno is a very, very good skater, but he was a non-factor in the 1500m final.

11. That was the plan, obviously--they all cut in front of Ohono at the last second
so as far as I'm concerned, the punishment fit the crime!

12. Passing Ohno had nothing to do with the fall...
The Koreans left Ohno in the dust going into the last corner.

Fighting for silver caused the fall.

15. All the speed and power in the world won't put you in the winner's circle

if you can't CONTROL them, as the athletes who've lost to Lindsey Vonn, Torah Birch and Alexandre Bilodeau can tell you.

7. He let it all hang out last night!
I was proud for White, the other USA cat who ended up on the podium with him, Shani and Lindsey and Julia too.

I love the Olympics (just dont like NBC's corporate broadcast of the events!)

9. I don't follow snowboarding, but do remember him from Torino...
the things he did on his board last night were incredible. And he seems a very genuine young man.

That said, I have to admit that I enjoyed the snowboard cross event more than the half-pipe.

10. He's good, but I hate the X-game-ification of the Olympics.
Especially when the X-games are like two weeks before the Olympics anyway.

13. i agree..
halfpipe comp is pretty boring anyway, IMHO. and if you're going to x-game-ify the olympics, then why not include some slopestyle/FR or dirt jumping on bicycles too?

14. Always Get A Kick Out If Him
I love the story of how, when he was young, and his parents taught him how to ski, he'd go so fast it scared his mother so she told him he could go as fast as he wanted as long as he did it backwards. Watching him last night I couldn't help wondering what his mother thought of the heights he reached.

16. I can't believe he thinks Animal is a better nickname than Flying Tomato
In his sport, the equivalency would be 49.2 compared to 2.6.
