Boss blows up after 4th straight loss . . .
well . . . that didn't take long . . .

http://nypost.com/sports/yankees/44751.htm

April 18, 2005 -- BALTIMORE - One dozen games into the season George Steinbrenner has had it with his high-priced and underachieving Yankees.

Shortly after yesterday's 8-4 loss to the Orioles in front of a sun-splashed Camden Yards crowd of 47,883 that stretched the Yankees' losing streak to four, The Boss cried uncle.

"Enough is enough," Steinbrenner said in a statement. "I am bitterly disappointed, as I am sure all Yankee fans are, by the lack of performance by our team. It is unbelievable to me that the highest paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk."

Then, as usual, The Boss said it was Joe Torre's mess to fix.

made it an even longer time frame now?

One can only hope!

3. Vintage Steinbrenner
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 09:31 AM by Jack Rabbit
There are several moments that define George Steinbrenner for me. Among them:
  • Any team would be happy to get the break the Yankees got in a post season game against the Baltimore Orioles several years ago when a young fan reached out into the field and pulled a fly ball into the stands; although it was clearly fan interference, the umpire blew the call and ruled the play a home run. Steinbrenner treated the youngster like a hero, making sure he had good seats for the remainder of post season play. Not to sound like a nanny, but what kind of message does that send to America's youth?
  • There was also a playoff game agains the Kansas City Royals in 1980 in which, with two out in the late innings, the third base coach sent a runner home from first on an extra-base hit; the runner was out at the plate. Up in the owner's box, Steinbrenner blew his stack and the coach was fired during the off season. While sending the runner was a gamble, it was a good one. Getting the runner at the plate required a perfect throw from the outfield and a perfect relay from short; incredibly, that is exactly what the Royals did. It was really a marvelous play. Steinbrenner, in effect, was blaming his third base coach because the Royals simply played superior baseball.
  • And then there is the time he fired his manager, Yogi Berra, after the Yankees lost what Steinbrenner called a "cricial three-game series." It was April. A crucial three-game series in April, George? I hope history is not about to repeat itself with Joe Torre.

4. As a Red Sox fan
I hope it is. I don't think there are many managers besides Torre who could deal with that collection of egos effectively.

6. what is THAT going to change?

steinbrenner releases a statement to the press? big deal.

I especially love this line, "It is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk". Maybe he just overpaid? Who made them the highest-paid team in baseball? they are also one of the oldest teams in baseball. old guys take longer to get going, break down quicker and take longer to heal.

now, I doubt that the yankees will fail to be there at the end of the year, but anything is possible.
