Miami Dolphins fire defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni

The season-long struggles of the Dolphins' defense might have cost the team a spot in the playoffs.

On Monday, the unit's performance cost defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni his job.

His dismissal might have been decided in the final three weeks of the season as Miami (7-9) lost three in a row. Miami fell behind by double digits in the first halves of losses to Tennessee, Houston and Pittsburgh. On Dec. 27, the Texans jumped to a 27-0 lead and held on to win 27-20.

Speculation regarding Pasqualoni's replacement immediately centered on past lieutenants of Bill Parcells, the Dolphins' head of football operations.

Former Virginia coach Al Groh, 65, who worked with Parcells with the New York Giants and Jets as well as New England, is on the market.

I know Trumad will be happy about this.

1. Excellent---I called for this a while back...
The Phins were clueless on Defense this season.... This is definitely a Bill Parcells move.

2. Good call, trumad
I hadn't seen that post. No wonder. Damn, you write small. :)

When a team is last in the league in pass defense, allowing 8.2 YPPA, someone is going to pay for it. The secondary coach, Bowles, is young and highly regarded, so the Syracuse guy was the logical target.

I guarantee Parcells is aware of that category. And the only other time Miami was worst in that stat a change was made in midseason. It was 1976. Shula brought back Arnsparger immediately as soon as he was let go by the Giants.

In regard to Henne, I loved him in college but his mechanics are more problematic than I realized at the time. I wouldn't be as concerned if he had good pocket presence. The combo of long delivery and lacking great football instincts means the play has to develop almost perfectly from the outset.
