EagleBank Bowl??
:wtf:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/28/AR2009122802198.html

Last year, organizers of the EagleBank Bowl carried out a twofold plan: Get the game off the ground, and introduce the Washington area to its own college football postseason event. Now, in the EagleBank Bowl's second year, officials tried to tackle a challenge faced by many of the other 34 bowl games now in operation: To create a brand that generates fan interest -- and thus stimulates spending in the local economy -- no matter which teams are playing in the game. They believe they are on track to establishing a sense of permanence on a bowl-season landscape that many view as oversaturated.

"It's starting to get slowly some traction, and that's good," said Jeff Fried, a primary consultant to the bowl. "I want people in this region to know that every Christmastime we're going to have a big-time football game here. . . . I think after another successful year, as you go into the third year, that foundation should really be getting there where you can start marketing that EagleBank Bowl name."

On Tuesday afternoon at RFK Stadium, the EagleBank Bowl will host Temple and UCLA, two teams that few expected would be playing in the game at the start of the season. But the Owls and Bruins find themselves here because neither of the bowl's original tie-ins was fulfilled. The EagleBank Bowl held the No. 8 selection of ACC teams, but only seven ACC teams were bowl eligible. Army, the EagleBank Bowl's other contractual tie-in this season, finished 5-7, one win shy of bowl eligibility.

This is an example of just one of the obstacles a young bowl must face during its march to sustainability. That the event is not held in a warm-weather locale only adds to the challenge. Until its brand becomes more concrete, the bowl's participants matter greatly to its degree of success and factor significantly into how much credibility it can stimulate, according organizers from other bowls around the country.

25,000 in attendance?? :wtf:

2. I attended last year's game because the Naval Academy was playing.
I bought a hot dog for a sailor. I told him sailors shouldn't have to buy their own in a crowd so heavy with officers.

My one (and only) job was to take care of my Sailors. It made anything else a cakewalk.

4. I'm at the Library of congress today and on the subway rode with a sailor in
his Cracker Jack. I asked him what he did in the Navy and it ends up he's a radioman - as was my uncle on IOWA in WWII - and on the sub MEMPHIS based out of Groton. Hot damn! He was on his way to the Washington Navy Yard for a re-enlistment ceremony. A chief and his wife sat across the aisle. The chief is not a bubblehead.

At any USNA game, sailors in uniform should eat for free. It was the training and dedication of our sailors that made the USN so much better than the Soviet Navy in the Cold War. We have to look out for them.

Good on you Boss!

5. Boss, more folks should have that attitude about leadership of any kind.
That's what's lacking in the corporate world.

I'll bet your sailors returned your loyalty.

7. Captain. Maybe the leadership in the corporate world should respect
their employees as the military does. If the corporate leadership shows absolutely no respect and only disdain for their employees, what kind of respect does corporate leadership deserve? ITS CALL SHIT!

6. Scraping the bottom of the barrel...
But good to hear they support youth football, B&GC and wounded veterans. But Temple and UCLA?

From the link:

The EagleBank Bowl garnered sponsorships from 61 corporations, many of which are based in the District. In its inaugural year, the bowl attracted 22 sponsors. The bowl has been involved with local youth football leagues, as well as events with local chapters of the Boys and Girls Club. Additionally, the bowl adopted as its primary charity the Wounded Warrior Project, which honors American service members injured in the line of duty.

10. I look forward to it
Temple played very well this at 9-3, laugh all you want but finishing #2 in the MAC is a pretty good accomplishment.

Kevin Prince for UCLA is a pretty good QB who was missed quite a few games due to injury against Tennessee which they won on the road. Also they have a strong defense that brings strong pressure led by Brian Price. Brian Price is an unstoppable force in the college game, at DT. He is very much like Suh but not as well known and you will get to see him play tonight.

I never understand why people make fun of some bowls and when they do it's one of the more interesting match-ups and with teams from smaller conferences that don't get on TV. I would like to watch all Northern Illinois games because I like how they are one of the top running teams year in and year out--see Michael Turner. Unfortunately I didn't but I will get a chance to see them in a bowl game.

12. As my brother calls it, the "Degenerate gambler" bowl
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 03:16 PM by hughee99
since the only people watching are the sort of gamblers who bet on Pee-Wee football, and those with relatives actually playing in the game.

15. Temple's O-line is better than I thought which admittedly I knew nothing about
They did a good job of containing Brian Price and the one play UCLA took him out because he was winded Temple scored a touchdown.

If you ask me your boss got the better deal unless you went to Florida to watch a football game. :)

16. I'm doing ESPN's Bowl Mania with some of my grad...
school friends. I could care less about most of these games, except that there's 9 of us playing at $10/person. Currently, I'm taking the lot of 'em to school and am ranked 348 out of everyone playing Bowl Mania. So, I sort of have an interest.
