Va. girl Tebow's date to award show
<snip>

"University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow didn't take home an award from the The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Thursday night, but he made national news from the red carpet with his date, the young woman he brought on his arm.

She was Kelly Faughnan, 20, whom he met the day before. Faughnan had been diagnosed with a brain tumor just before Thanksgiving last year. Her wish was to go to Disney World during the awards show to get a glimpse of Tebow.

Faughnan is from Clifton, Va., according to several news reports.

Fox News reported that Faughnan had asked her family to make the trip from the Washington, D.C., area and was wearing an "I Love Timmy" button at an event Wednesday night.

"I got to meet her and she was a fan," Tebow said in a Fox News video from the red carpet. "We just became good friends last night, and I asked if she wanted to walk the red carpet with me tonight. And she said yes and went out and got a nice dress today, and we're having a good time."

"It's the best thing ever," she said."

1. Say what you will about Tebow
The man is a class act. And this is coming from a die-hard 'Canes fan. Way to go Tim. You truly are an inspiration to us all.

19. Imagine what would happen if it were Tony Romo's charities being discussed.
That would really bring the HATERS out. Interesting the kind responses that Tebow has gotten here. Says something positive about the people here.

6. yeah
It's hard to say a bad-thing about someone who did such an upstanding thing. He's not my favorite football player by any means, but that takes quality of character to do what he did.

11. I'm sure it was big thrill for her
But I'm equally sure Tebow did it for the publicity. Call me a cynic, but that's the way I look at it.

I had a brain tumor -- where is my red carpet walk, darn it?

13. It certainly didn't hurt his image, but
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 02:42 PM by hughee99
can't you really say that about almost any celebrity that does something like this?

A classy move, in either case.

16. Not all of them
Brendan Shanahan, former Detroit Red Wing befriended a little boy with cancer on a hospital visit. He visited that kid every week, arranged for him and his family to sit in a suite at Wings games when the kid was healthy enough, got him an autographed hockey stick, took the Stanley Cup to the hospital, and served as a pallbearer at his funeral. Not one word leaked out until the little boy died and even then it was just a brief mention in the paper.

Richard Hamilton, a current Detroit Piston, adopts a high school basketball team in Detroit and in his hometown of Coatesville, PA, every year; buying their uniforms, shoes, and balls and paying for transportation to away games plus team meals and he drops in on their practices. He doesn't seek publicity about it, just once in all the years he's done it has word gotten out and photographers shown up.

I'm sure this girl would have been happy going anywhere with her hero; to a local movie, having him over for dinner at her house, any number of things. The fact that it was a red-carpet, jampacked event arouses suspicion in me, makes it just as big a deal for Tebow ("Look at me do my good deed!") as it does for her.

18. I see what you mean, but many athletes have some sort of charity set up
that they founded or donate money to. They spend time with kids, or visit soldiers, or whatever, and just because the NFL, or MLB or ESPN makes sure it gets reported doesn't mean it's only for the publicity.

I'm sure the girl would have been happy going anywhere with Tebow, but I'll bet dressing up fancy for an awards ceremony and getting her picture taken in public with him ranks somewhere above a movie or dinner at her house. She gets an opportunity to do something that most people never get to do (dress up and walk the carpet for a big-time award ceremony) AND she gets to hang out with her hero. It's a two-fer.

14. Agreed. It makes Timmy look good.
1goblue had a brain tumor and has hearing problems, like Timmy's date.

Call me a cynic too. If he'd done this under that radar and it leaked out, I'd be a bit more impressed. But I think he wanted to make himself look good.

17. Can this be done "under the radar"?
He's a high profile athlete, (seemingly) devout x-ian and single at a red carpet event with a girl no one's ever seen before. Of course someone is going to ask about her, and he's not going to lie about it, is he?

1goblue had a good point. It's a high profile event, he doesn't have to advertise it, people are going to ask him about it.

21. I applaud him for this.
Being Florida, they've been playing this almost nonstop on all the local stations. He really made that girl's day, and she really deserved it.

So, Tebow...I don't like you, but I like what you did here for her. That was a pretty classy move, and she'll never forget it.

23. Public or not, it was a fine thing he did
I'm sure he knows his Bible well enough to realize that the fact that this is a publicly-known good deed affects the heavenly accounting. But regardless of motive, the outcome is that this girl had a nice evening, and that's good enough for me.

Even if it was a PR move, and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't, it looks like he made at least one person very happy...
