Source: ND staff told Weis is out

Charlie Weis is out after five seasons as Notre Dame coach.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4700891

A member of Notre Dame's coaching staff told ESPN's Joe Schad on Monday that the staff was informed of the decision in an afternoon meeting.

The New York Daily News first reported that Weis was out.

Notre Dame players have scheduled a mid-afternoon players meeting that will include a vote on whether they want to play in a bowl game after a 6-6 season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players' wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.

The member of the coaching staff told Schad a decision hasn't been made on an interim coach; Notre Dame will wait to see whether the players will decide if they want to participate in a bowl game first.

Weis was not in his office early Monday, though there were no announcements about whether he will return for a sixth season. Swarbrick has said he will make that decision within the next few days.

----------------

Can't say I'm all the disappointed or surprised. Probably more disappointed that after that first season he was such a failure.

1. The first season was good because of the "change" factor, just
like Ty's first season was good...neither can really coach, although at least Weis knows offense, Ty knows...well, squat.

2. A stupid hire in the 1st place......
Big time colleges should never hire guys who have no ..... HEAD.... coaching experience. It only works out about 20% of the time.

Colleges shouldn't hire guys who have only succeeded in pro football. Totally different games requiring different skills.

Weis saying his team would have a "schematic advantage"...aka...be better coached.... was arrogant and beyond stupid. After 2 seasons Weis said, "We've evened up the talent. Now let's see who wins." Too stupid and how do those 6 win seasons feel, Charlie and ND?

And the dumb asses signed this buffoon to a 10 year 3+ million per year contract because he lost a close game to USC.....

Now we will find out how stupid the new ND AD is. Let's see how many coaches turn them down.....publicly..... before they hire the new coach.

One of Jack's tenants of college coach hiring is..... Never fire your coach until you've already got a (secret) agreement with the next coach to come on board.

4. Yeah, but who else did they have to choose from?
I don't think this time around has a better pool, either...lots of names being tossed around but not many of those names are coaches who aer actually available.

11. Kelly has a great resume.....
Head coach for about 18 years and winning big at Cincy, a place without assets. Edsall at Uconn would be very good, IMO. The guy at TCU has been terrific.

They're probably too stupid to know it, however.

13. Why don't they go to the MAC?
It's in their back yard and has turned out a lot of great coaches. IMO, it's the perfect training ground.

7. I find it interesting
That Weiss, Willingham, and Bob Davies had ALMOST identical records on being fired. I don't think the coaching is the problem. ND can't compete for recruits as they used to.

8. Actually, Weis did well in recruiting and produced a decent offense...
...unfortunately, he knew nothing about defense.

That said, I often wondered if ND was serious about competing, because Davies didn't seem like he would contniue Lou Holtz' tradition, Willingham was a joke, and as for Weis, he might have been the best they could do at the time.

12. No one knows for sure...
...lots of figures being "guessed at"...but the actual contract is private. That said, i'm sure it's a lot of money.

14. The cost of college is going thru the roof across the board.
Edited on Mon Nov-30-09 05:23 PM by stopbush
Salaries like this to fucking coaches are one reason why. Who cares if the college students and parents pay thru the nose.

I find this more offensive than the ridiculous salaries paid on Wall Street. Talk about being paid for failure!

16. At least Notre Dame is private
Yes, it's obscene, but better than if it happened at a public university.

21. I understand, but it does impact public schools at some point
Edited on Mon Nov-30-09 07:12 PM by stopbush
because it starts to bend the pay curve higher.

Whether private or public, the colleges whose teams end up on TV b'casts are competing for the same talent, be it coaches or athletes. A ND pays ridiculous salaries and soon the salaries at pubic schools rise to compete.

15. This may convince you that Notre Dame should look to the MAC
In fact, I think (and have said) that Michigan should have done this when Lloyd left.

"College football is better when we do that (compete for national championships)"

And then in answer to a question:

"Notre Dame remains a critical piece of the college football landscape"

hahahaha! The insane arrogance of ND people - they really DO think that the whole world cares about their status.

Pro tip: Nobody much gives a rat's @ss about ND. Please join us in the present.

Pro tip2: Actually, keep living in the past. Makes my Saturdays much more lolz.

that Stoops is staying put. Thank goodness. We could use a new offensive coordinator, and a new O-line, but not a new coach.
