Defensive lineman to win Heisman trophy?
Edited on Sun Nov-29-09 12:54 PM by SpiralHawk
This would be a stunner...

By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star
Sunday, Nov 29, 2009

"When Ndamukong Suh was a sophomore, the chant was a more restrained “Suuuuh.” When he ran off the field Friday — helmet in hand, looking as stern as if Colt McCoy were already standing before him — he was met with a line of U’s that stretched longer than a Led Zeppelin song.

“Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.”

Hey, he’s earned each U, as far as Husker fans are concerned. Their love for the 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle is unquestioned.

But has Big Suh earned enough love across the country to possibly make one last push for the biggest award in college football, or at least enough love to get an invitation to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony?

Unless you’ve been locked in a wine cellar for the past month, you know Nebraska is about to play on its biggest stage in eight years when it meets undefeated Texas in the Big 12 title game Saturday. And certainly you’re aware that McCoy is one of the top names in the Heisman conversation right now.

goes to offensive players. That's why Suh winning would be so stunning - He is a great defensive player, no matter how good any offensive player might be.

Here's the question Cornhusker fans are asking about next week's Big 12 Championship game in Texas: "Could an amazing performance by Suh against Texas and Colt McCoy vault Suh into top consideration for the award?"

4. Not invariably
But you do need to score some points, it seems... the only defensive winner who comes to mind for me is Charles Woodson, but without doing kick returns I don't think he even gets invited to New York.

Still, I'd love to see someone other than the offensive ball handlers win a Heisman... just on principle.

8. Probably not
But Charles Woodson won it as a two way player and is now one of the best defensive players in the NFL.

9. I would love to see this!
Almost as awesome (but not quite!) as when Woodson won it. It's about time this thing was handed around.

13. Well, a really good performance by Colt would have ensure his win BUT
that didn't happen...then again, Nebraska didn't win. I still say Colt because so many people thought he should have won last year.
