University of Miami resists ESPN film, but will show it (The 'U')
The film 'The U,' which the University of Miami wanted no part of, recalls the dominance - and suspect behavior - of the 1980s and '90s.

<snip>

"Inside a Miami Beach office that feels like a not-too-reverential Hurricanes shrine, the finishing touches are being applied to the documentary of record on the University of Miami football program.

Stacks of old newspaper clippings and UM media guides sit atop a table. A Ray Lewis action figure poses menacingly on a desk, and a stuffed "Ibis" lurks across the room. A UM pin cushion and Canes pillow are propped on the couch.

Director Billy Corben and producer Alfred Spellman aren't only accomplished filmmakers -- they're also former UM students. Corben believes Canes fans will be pleased when their two-hour documentary, The U, airs at 9 p.m. Dec. 12 on ESPN, in a high-profile slot following the Heisman Trophy show.

"For Canes fans, this will be a reminder of what they loved about this team. For Canes haters, this will be a reminder of what they hated about this team," said Corben, who has crafted six films with Spellman, most notably Cocaine Cowboys. "I'm also hoping the haters might walk away with some passing appreciation of what the team brought to the table in terms of their pop culture contributions, the merger of sports and entertainment, the style of game played."

1. I don't know if he was there during those times
Edited on Tue Nov-24-09 12:16 PM by JonLP24
but Dennis Erickson said when he was at Miami those players loved to play football. The practices he coached where the most intense he's been apart of. They played practices like it was an important game. He also recalled after a devastating hurricane the community really rallied behind the team.

Hopefully DE stays with Arizona State for another year or two despite what many fans want because he really improved this defense(ranked #1 in Pac-10) and brought a running game to ASU. He didn't have a lot to work with on offense considering the QB play. A wildly inaccurate 5th year Senior Danny Sullivan and an injured freshman QB and a true freshman who wasn't ready.

I'll add he's had to deal with a lot of injuries especially on the offensive line and Lou Groza Award winner has missed many games due to a groin injury and some receivers went down.

Edit/Take the UCLA game for example, the defense held them to 9 points(3 field goals) but the offense gave up 2 turnovers returned for touchdown(freshman QB making his first collegiate start) and 4 turnovers overall. Lost 23-13.

2. Of course they loved to play football...
...when you don't go to class it's easy to make time for practice.

4. Pretty ignorant statement
n 14 of the last 16 years, the University of Miami football team's graduation rate far exceeded the national average of the American Football Coaches Association's member schools. Since 1991, UM's average AFCA rate is 71.52 percent, well ahead of the national average of 58 percent.

10. What's wrong with Ray Lewis?
He does a lot for disadvantaged youth, see--Ray Lewis-52-Foundation.

Plus I'd kill to have him on my team. However I'm happy to have Antrel Rolle :)

5. Dennis Erickson was fucking horrible for the UM
He inherited JJ's players and won an NC, then left leaving them with the sanctions that set the team in a spiral until Butch Davis righted the ship.

Fuck Erickson.

8. I thought that was someone in the financial aid office fault
All I know he's been relatively successful at different programs and shared a Pac 10 title with USC 2 years ago. Just one more year is all I ask for. :)

18. I wish that era had never ended
Every tackle and every big play were runaway euphoria, worthy of a 6 man dance. Relentless athleticism. The jealous fools hated it and couldn't do anything about it. Florida, Notre Dame and Penn State were so cowardly they ran away. Jerks like Rick Reilly whined without ammo. Miami could have won the national title every year from '85 through '92 if just one game had gone slightly different in a few of those years. There will never be a run like that again, not one with aggressive national scheduling instead of the hide and hope strategy of the SEC.

The residue of the hatred is ignorant and predictable over statement of the off field problems.

The other day I heard the new Luther Campbell rap song that will accompany the program, "It's All About The U..."
