The Lions ARE Thanksgiving
From the Detroit Free Press today:

"SI.com writer: It’s not Thanksgiving without the Lions

This time of year, a hue-andcry arises over how the NFL shouldn’t subject the nation to the Lions every Thanksgiving, that it’s time to spread the game around.

But not Dan Shaughnessy, writing at SI.com. He likes the tradition (he’s also a Boston Globe guy who’s used to the Patriots, so maybe he likes the change of pace).

Anyway, he writes: “You can make fun of the Lions if you want. Why not? Everybody does. … Knock yourselves out.

Enjoy the yucks.

“Just don’t take away my Lions on Thanksgiving. The Lions are Thanksgiving. They are as much a part of the holiday as turkey, stuffing and apple pie. … “There’s comfort in the sight of the Lions on the tube.

From Greg Landry to Earl Morrall to Joey Harrington to Matthew Stafford. It’s just not Turkey Day unless the Lions are on television.”

Amen and pass the gravy. "

1. Yeah..SURE they are
everybody wants to see a team that's gone 2-24 over the last two years. It's just a matter of time until the Thanksgiving day game is taken away from Detroit or a revolving basis is instituted.

Then we'll all have something to be thankful for..

5. Better the Lions than my team
Why risk sustained injury brought on by a short week?

7. It's strange to me how people want to mess with tradition
I love tradition. I'm tired of people monkeying with it. And sports traditions are the best of all. I love going to Michigan Stadium and knowing I'm sitting in the building Fielding Yost designed (for that matter, I like being in Yost Arena, knowing I'm in the first field house ever built). I love the way hockey teams have a handshake line at the end of their playoff series and how they skate around the rink holding the Stanley Cup over their head. I like how they still have ticker tape parades when New York teams win. I like new tradtions that have taken hold, like the way they play "One Shining Moment" at the end of the NCAA tournament.

I honestly do not understand why people feel the need to change things (and why they would want to do one more kick in the face to the city of Detroit, for that matter). The Thanksgiving weekend is packed with games for all to enjoy, so no one is missing seeing their team play. Of course, the fact that the Lions invented this tradition should not be overlooked. If some newbie team wants a tradition, let them come up with their own. Though after watching the games last weekend and musing over the Baltimore - Colts game and the St. Louis - Cardinals game, I'm not sure that cities that can't even hang onto their teams should be allowed to carry the banner of any sort of tradition.

Yes, the Lions are Thanksgiving.

10. Hey Lisa
Love the Lion Avatar, best sports Avatar around. I invite you to watch Arkansas-LSU Saturday evening. Mallet is destroying every Arkansas passing record in the books and he's just a sophomore. I think the Hog Offense will score more points then the Tiger Offense.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Though not my favorite logo. Not sure what is, I like the Panthers..

I also like Steelers, Falcons, Eagles, Titans, Texans, Bills, Broncos and many others including my own team.

9. Best of Luck to the Lions and I want them to stay on TV on Thanksgiving
Your'e right my friend, The Lions are Thanksgiving. I have a lot of fond Thanksgiving memories and the Lions have been a part of most of them. And I have always thought the Lions have the best uniforms in the NFL. I probably won't be watching them this year because we are going to the Fairgrounds in New Orleans to watch and enjoy and hopefully win at the horse races but I will be pulling for Detroit once again on Thanksgiving.

12. As a Cowboys fan, I appreciate the tradition, also. After a big meal,
we would always watch the Cowboys game, going back to the 70's. We always made sure we had eaten before the all-important 4:00 game with the Cowboys!

:hi:

13. Funny - our dinner always revolved around the Lions
It was basically planned to start about the time the game ended!

Now I'm on the West Coast and do a brunch every year - my friends come over and watch the game with me. It's fun.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! (And I do try and watch Mallett play when I can).
