He'd be a bona fide coaching legend if he'd coached at schools that got more exposure.
http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_13795600San Jose State's Dick Tomey, one of college football's most venerable coaches, is retiring at the end of this season after five years with the Spartans.
Tomey, 71, plans to announce his decision today at a news conference, a source told the Mercury News....
Tomey, in his 46th season of coaching, came to San Jose in 2005 as the football team floundered with its attendance, record and academics. In his second season, he helped lead the Spartans to a 2006 New Mexico Bowl victory — their first bowl appearance in 16 years.
"He was just what we needed," said Donald Kassing, the former SJSU president who hired Tomey. "He taught those kids how to win. They were better people coming out of his program."
