A shout out to Maine Maritime Football team!

(Disclosure: my son is on the team, so I'm not exactly an uninterested observer)

Maine beats Curry for the New England Football Conference championship game (Div.3). Best game I've ever witnessed in my 45+ years of game playing/watching (ok, i'm a little biased). Curry, the Boyd Conference champs were the consensus pregame favorites and had homefield advantage...but little MMA proved to be a worthy opponent. Maine has the #1 rusher in the country and the #1 rushing team (D3). They set the single game Div.3 record this year against Coast Guard, over 700 yards.

Maine got in the hole early, down 14-0 about 5 minutes into the game. They battled back to just down 21-20 at the half and took the lead early in the 3rd quarter. They went back and forth through the remainder of the game. Maine going up by 7 with a little over 2 minutes remaining...then Curry marched down the field and tied it up with just under 2 minutes. Maine started to stall on the last drive and it looked like the game game would go into OT.

Thank, a most amazing finish. With a few seconds left, a pass went incomplete, but Curry was called with pass interference. With 1 second left, Tyler Angel, the MMA quarterback, threw into the Curry endzone...pass was deflected and fell into Alex Coulombe's hands...touchdown! Unbelievable ending...the only one I can remember that was similar was Doug Flutie's last second TD against Miami in 84.

Sp MMA, the little team that could, is going to national championship round...ESPN will be choosing the match-ups today at 3:00...this proud dad and mom will be watching the show and wondering if we'll be taking a trip later this week.
