The Who to perform at Super Bowl, Sports Illustrated says
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 10:20 PM by Scurrilous
<snip>

"According to a Sports Illustrated blog post (which cites anonymous sources), The Who will be the halftime performers for Super Bowl XLIV at Land Shark Stadium in Miami.

The '60s English rock band is known for such hits as "My Generation," "Baba O'Reilly," "Pinball Wizard" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," which has been the theme song of CSI:Miami since 2002.

If The Who does play at the Super Bowl, it would be the latest "classic rock" band to do so since the Super Bowl decided to take a "safer" route with its halftime performances after the 2002 Janet Jackson nipple fiasco. Recent performers include Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Prince, The Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney."

19. Hmm. The Who are icons that appeal to several generations
I went with my MOTHER to a concert of theirs years ago. They really are very very good. I would take them over a boring ass marching band...a dime a dozen anyday. Christ comparing a marching band to the Who is like saying Oasis is as good as the Beatles...:eyes:
I have to say, I like this revivial...The MTV/Janet Jackson halftime show was one of the worst things I have ever seen, wardrobe malfunction aside.

26. I made my preference known
Invite the state champion marching bands from the states where the Super Bowl teams are from, and give the kids a chance ot perform on a national stage. I'd rather watch that than 60-year-olds creaking about on stage, playing songs 40 years old, or pop starlets who wonder why the ball they use during the game is shaped so funny.

24. Agreed. Ever since Janet Jackson they have gone old white man rock (Prince excluded). Apparently
America is a bunch of fucking pussies that cannot see a woman's nipple for .05 second, but is gung-ho in throwing young men's lives away in a war based on lies.

I remember they used to have both old rockers and new popsters together (Aerosmith and Britney, Sting and No Doubt). Why can't they do that again and attract both audiences?

30. They should get those show bands from the traditional black colleges
They do not get the exposure they deserve.

That, or the two bands from the MNC game. I would vastly prefer marching bands, too.

That said, when the Who performs, I think they should sing "Substitute", as a salute to the second and third-string players who will never get the MVP.

They may as well have Mr. Buddy Guy. He is in the R and R Hall of Fame and helped to set the standard for all Rock music. Of course, Mr. Guy might sing about the crumbling inner cities in this country so I guess he wouldn't be a great choice after all.
And one more thought. Since the Super Bowl is an American phenomenon, why not have an American Band? Grand Funk Railroad. Ah, never mind.

58. How can you spot a "Classic Rock" band?
The lead singer says, "I'm going to play something of the new album" and the fans rush to the bathroom or concession stand so they don't miss any of the good stuff later on.

I love The Who, and I'm looking forward to seeing them, but the Superbowl seems to be all Classic Rock now.

Sorry, I loved the Who when I was in college - just about wore out my copy of Live at Leeds. But that was 35 years ago. There are a lot of things I can't do as well today as I could back then. I thought they embarrassed themselves.

67. So you're an ageist? They got too old for you?
You didn't take Pete seriously when he said "hope I die before I get old" did you? :P

Seriously, is there a certain cut-off age that rock n rollers should just pack it in? So other people won't feel uncomfortable? Y' know, some people think the Stones can still bring it. I think as long as they're still having fun and people still want to see them, I don't have a problem with it. I saw The Who in about early 90s and thought it was a lot of fun even though Pete was already going deaf and had to dial it down a bit.

Bunch of country pukes next year. After that, let's move the pop stuff into the 70's and 80's at least.

EW&F is a classy, pro band, with great chops, a ton of hits, and they're every bit as "safe" as the Who or McCartney or Springsteen.

I'm nominating EW&F for the 2012 SB.
