MLB: Baseball GMs pass on expanding instant replay

By RICK GANO
The Associated Press
Published: Tuesday, November 10, 2009 2:43 PM MST

CHICAGO | Baseball general managers failed to take a vote Tuesday on expanding instant replay following a postseason filled with blown calls by umpires.

Baseball began video review in August 2008 but only to determine whether potential home runs were fair or foul or cleared fences.

"We talked about the mechanics behind instant replay. We talked about the structure. We talked about where it's housed, the umpires' procedure," said Jimmie Lee Solomon, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner's office. "But it was all confined to the current instant replay system that we have."

Commissioner Bud Selig opposes widening the use of video review....

5. The Umpires - not instant replay, right?
Sometimes I don't know where your eastern (except for Cowchips) loyalties reside.

6. yeah
when Howard trapped the ball and the umps ruled he caught the ball, that sure helped the Yankees. Or when Swisher tagged up legally and the ump ruled him out that sure helped the Yankees. When Joe West called out A-Rod on a pitch that was in the batters box, that sure helped the Yankees. When Howard never touched home plate, but the umpire counted the run that sure helped the Yankees.

7. I submit the Minnesota series
An absolute disgrace. BTW, I am not a Yankee hater. Mantle was one of my favorites as a kid, got to see him in person. I do hate all Balmer teams tho--I must confess.

10. That series was awful...that said, I sort of see the reason not to expand...
...games can be excruciatingly slow and this would just slow them down even more.

12. one bad call
granted it was atrocious. But the Twins still should have scored that inning and didn't. They had the bases loaded an no out.

11. that was a bad call
but it was one call. Earlier in that game, Cal Ripken got an rbi double after taking what should have been strike 3.

15. "Knobby's" phantom tag of Offerman.
"Knobby" missed him by 2 feet! "Knobby" was how umpire Tim Tschida referred to Knoblauch in a postgame interview in which he admitted he blew the call.

And how is it even possible that two players, neither standing on the base are BOTH tagged out and one is somehow safe.

Pine tar anyone?

Yes, you see bad ball/strike calls everywhere, but as long as the umpire is consistent about it through the course of a game (for both teams), you can't really complain that much.
