Interesting thread in GD about folks that refer to others as "haters"

How is calling someone you NEVER MET a "hater" a viable part of a debate, the point of which is usually to convince someone to agree with you. And I agree. You will not ever be able to get everyone to agree with you.

But to call them "haters"? That shows YOU to be a fool and it causes those truly deserving of the descriptor to get a pass.

OK, example...

Joey Porter is a self-professed "hater" of the Patriots. I can come here and call him a Patiots hater.

But if I were actually in a conversation or debate with the guy, it wouldn't be helpful or mature to actually call the guy a "hater", you know?

In fact, a lot of what we perceive as "hate" is really only fear. Or maybe even envy.

4. When Posters Call Your Team "Evil"

Then what other phrase can you use, other than "hater". There are posters here on this forum that throw that phrase around all of the time.

I use the term "evil" for people and organizations that cause loss of human life and create unimagineable suffering, not for a professional sports team that pays it players well.

BTW, if you skin is so thin that you can't handle your team being referred to as the $kankees and the Bankees, then maybe you should not be here. If you are true to your word, then maybe you will call out all of the Dallas Cowboy (haters as you would refer to them as) when they make various slurs regarding the team's name.

I'm not the one who calls sports teams, "evil" or "satan" or other vulgar terms. I don't do that. All I did was post pictures of the Yankees' championship and point out the hypocrisy of other posters.

14. I think I disagree on two counts:

First, context. I hate bananas, hate the Dallas Stars, and hate animal abusers. It should be pretty obvious that the H word has three different meanings in those contexts, and in the sports example is usually trash-talking banter between fans. (I suppose there are people who genuinely hate sports teams - as in cheer injuries and pray for a plane crash - but freaks like that don't deserve consideration.)

Second, to the extent that internet debate is intended to convince anyone, sometimes the object of convincing is the audience. If you can convince other readers that your opponent is motivated by mindless hate, then you've gone a long way towards winning your point...
