(Larry)Johnson released by Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have released troubled running back Larry Johnson.

A two-paragraph statement from the team Monday simply listed Johnson's statistics and announced his release. Johnson was due to come off a two-week suspension Monday.

Johnson on Sunday finished serving a two-week suspension, which covered one game and the team's bye week, for making gay slurs. He was 75 yards from breaking Priest Holmes' franchise record (6,070) for career rushing yards.

Johnson was disciplined for questioning coach Todd Haley's qualifications on his Twitter account and twice used a homosexual slur in an exchange with one of his Twitter followers. Last Monday, Kansas City reached a settlement with Johnson through his agent, reducing the amount of pay Johnson would lose by half, to $315,000.

2. Too young and too much money....
...hate to sound like an old fart, but we're making kids millionaires, kids who really had nothing prior to it, and on top of that we're worshipping them...a great combination to make someone level-headed.

4. In his case he should have been very well prepared,
his dad has been the defensive line coach at Penn State forever.

This was his own undoing.

But he is talented. Someone will pick him up.

6. I will add

He is 29, no amount of money will suddenly turn someone into a homophobe. He used a gay slur with someone on Twitter then the following day he told a reporter to "get your fa**** ass out of here."

His final post before his account went to private which was to the same person. "Make me regret it. Lmao. U don't stop my checks. Lmao. So 'tweet' away."

About his dad you're right which is where all this controversy started. He was praising his dad while bashing his head coach and among the things he mentioned was that his dad played briefly for the Redskins and the coach from Remember the Titans

8. Yeah, that has nothing to do with money...
...has to do with ignorance.

15. His Dad Claims He Wasn't Raised That Way, And I Believe Him.
However, as everyone knows, professional football is an extremely homophobic environment. I don't doubt that's where he picked up his charming speech.

As a Penn State alum, I'm very disappointed in Larry. Though I suspect his trashing his coach has far more to do with him being let go than his homophobia.

16. I believe it's a combination of that
Hell I even suspect the Chiefs fans protesting the idea of Larry Johnson breaking Priest Holmes franchise record had something to do with it as well. Plus he has a history of this so this isn't a first time thing for LJ and I know Todd Haley from his time in AZ doesn't put up with shit.

3. I hate to say it but another team will probably sign him
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 12:02 PM by JonLP24
Hopefully not my team but they don't need him with the two young backs in Hightower and Wells.

It would be nice for every team to take a pass on him considering the gay slurs or what have you.

9. Yup
I respect Vermeil and he actually apologized at the time for saying that.

Vermeil had said it was time for Johnson "to take the diaper off and go play"

In the same article he later apologized and said he was joking when he made that comment.

11. Ladell Betts filled in nicely for Portis
70 yards off of 15 carries(4.7 YPC) and a TD.

However I think TZ is protesting the team.

12. Yep JonLP is right.
I'm not watching/contributing to the Skins anymore till Snyder fires Cerrato and gets a REAL GM.

13. smart move
I still can't fathom that Washington is still able to pull more fans to its games than Jacksonville, which has a decent team.

14. History
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 01:05 PM by JonLP24
72 years playing in Washington(consider the generations that grew up rooting for the 'Skins), 3 Super Bowl wins, 2 NFL Championships beats Jacksonville's expansion history with 2 appearance in the AFC Championship Game 12 and 10 years ago and recent years of struggles.
