Yankees Win 2009 World Series
Source: NY Times

A season of redemption came to its conclusion Wednesday night for the Yankees, who beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-3, in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series. The victory gave the Yankees their 27th championship, a quest nine years in the making.

23. When you buy an All Star Team you SHOULD play better
Most blatant buying of a championship in Team Sports History and a black eye for baseball. And don't say "they didn't break any rules" because frankly neither did a lot of CEOs who gamed the system and wrecked our economy either. Just because you used your influence to corrupt the rules so you can get away with something doesn't make it not wrong.

76. All Baseball fans should be bitter..
This bought World Series title will only encourage NY to spend more and by osmosis the Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers and to a lesser extent the Angels will have to keep up again by spending way too much because their fan bases will want them to compete. And what about the rest of the teams? They're going to become less and less competitive as only a handful of teams can even get remotely close to Yankees' funny money and they're going to be stuck with far less talent as a result.

All this does is enhance the inequity of the current system tenfold.

The Yankees not winning made them look foolish for spending that much money every year. Other GMs were happy to figure out another route and salaries actually started to decrease this year.

Not going to happen now. The Yankees won, Philadelphia is a large enough market with a lot of bigger contracts. Boston and both LA teams were in the playoffs.

Things just got dramatically worse for the Milwaukees, KCs, Cincys, Clevelands, Pittsburghs, Tampa Bays, etc of the world.

And in effect the sport just got worse for 90% of the fans that don't reside in New York.

33. And they pay a hefty fine for that..........
which is distributed between the other AL owners who promptly use that money to:

a.) Buy better talent to compete with the Yankees

b.) Put the money in their pockets and complain about the Yankees unfair advantage.

If you chose b.) BINGO! You're a winner. :)

No one becomes a Major League Baseball Team owner to lose money. They're all greed-heads. The Steinbrenners just happen to be much better at it than the rest. At least they give their fans their money's worth, which is more than can be said about the vast majority of owners who cheat their fan base by putting sub-standard teams on the field while pocketing huge sums of money for nothing.

75. The amount of money they make from revenue sharing is a pittance
in compared to what the Yankees keep to use on payroll alone.

To act like there is an even playing field because of the minimalist revenue sharing plan in place is either a vast lack of understanding of reality or covering up for your favorite team.

37. Sports at most levels has become all about winning. The NY Yankees epitomizes how money
has destroyed Pro Sports. And the worst thing is that our youth think that winning is the goal. One day we will have animated games so the owners wont have to pay a cent, and each team can win on the home town's screens. Everyone is a winner, everyone is happy.

34. Why do you think the other owners.......
constantly balk at a salary cap? Because they LOVE the money they get from the "revenue sharing" fines the Yankees pay for their talent. Now, they COULD use that money to buy better players, but most put that money directly in their bank accounts and cheat their fan base out of players that could make them contenders.

Yeah, it's a greedy sport, but what sport isn't? In essence, baseball is entertainment, and the New York Yankees entertain and please their fans like no other sports team in history. Wow, you're right. That really sucks, doesn't it? :sarcasm:

...when is the last time the Yankees organization developed a player(s) through their farm system, ie... A, AA, AAA baseball leagues? I used to be a big Yankees fan, back in the day of Thurman Munson, Chris Chambliss, Billy Martin, Sparky Lyle. When Graig Nettles left the Yankees for San Diego, so went any affection I had for the Yankees. No real baseball players left.

27. Jeter, Posada, Petitte, Cano, Cabrera, and Mariano Rivera all came up in the Yankee farm system
It's true that Utley, Rollins, Howard, and Hamel came up in the Phillies farm system, but Cliff Lee didn't, and Joe Blanton didn't, and Pedro Martinez didn't, and Jason Werth didn't, and Brad Lidge didn't. And on and on. So, who are these big ticket trades and free agents? Sabathia, Damon, A-Rod, Teixeira. And who? Burnett? He got chased out of game 5. Look at the Phillies: Ibanez, Feliz, half the middle relief (which is not true of the Yankees). But it doesn't really matter anyway: this is free agency, and I'm glad players can negotiate for salary.

36. Who?
Who are the "best" players in the Yankee line-up "pinched" from small market teams?

Jeter? No. He's a farm system guy.
Damon? Oh, yes, he was "pinched" from the very small market team known as the Boston Red Sox. Obscure, I know.
Teixeira? Maybe you got one there. God knows the Los Angeles Angels are hardly even a going concern!
A-Rod? Texas signed his contract, and sent him packing when they couldn't pay. Not exactly a pinch there.
Posada? Farm system guy.
Swisher. Well, maybe. The Chicago White Sox aren't really a "big market" team, right? Oh, the A's you say? Like their strategy for years hasn't been to bring up young talent and sell 'em off. And really, Swisher?
Matsui? Come on.
Cabrera? Farm system guy.
Cano? Farm system guy.
Oh, I know, I know! Hairston Jr.! That's the guy that won them the Series, pinched most brutally from the Baltimore Orioles when they traded him for a minor league catcher.

The only arguments you have are on Sabathia and Burnett, maybe.

42. Bottom line is the Yankees buy up everybody.
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 11:59 AM by ClusterFreak
Jeter? Farm system guy...whom they can afford to pay.
Damon? No Boston isn't small market but the Yankees can afford to pay him too.
Teixeira? Sabathia and Burnett? The base salary for those three is more than the 2008 Opening Day TOTAL player payrolls of the Pirates ($48,689,783), Athletics ($47,967,126), Rays ($43,820,597), and Marlins ($21,811,500).
A-Rod? Please. Don't get me started. Yeah Texas signed his quarter billion dollar, 10 year contract. And who stepped in to pay it when they couldn't?

I could go on about the other guys on your list...my point is the Yankees can afford to buy and to keep or to home grow and keep any player they want. Always. They are unencumbered by any financial restrictions, including the luxury tax. The Red Sox, the Mets and a few other teams try to keep up with them but the Yankees simply spend them all under the table.

The salary cap must come to baseball or things will never change.

61. According to you, money buys championships. So the Yankees should win every year.
But they don't. They've spent money (like every other team) every year, and yet they do not win every year.

Because money doesn't play on the field, the players do. It's not about money. It's about teamwork, skill, determination, and drive. The Yankees had that this year, and the best team won.

And A-Rod finally getting a ring made this Series even more special! :D

Did the Yankees beat Russia in baseball? Did they beat France or Italy in the Fall Classic? Hardly world Champs if the majority of the world doesn't play. At least in soccer there's some truth in the title World Cup. Bud Selig is the worst thing to happen to baseball since the designated hitter.

The Yankees deserved to win. The team played superbly.

And to those who are talking about "buying a championship": if that's the case, then shouldn't the
Yankees win every year, year after year?

Some folks should grow up and show some class like the couple of Philly fans on this thread.

I predicted Yankees in 7 but the Phillies' offense underperformed. With all their best players under contract next year, I'm sure
they'll be formidable once again.

BTW, do you think the Yankees will keep Matsui? Not sure if they want a full-time DH, but he sure has proved his value time
and again. I hope they sign up Damon again, too. He was one of the best performers during this Series.
