The meme that the Yanks buy their way to championships is fucking ignorant.
The last one they won was in 2000... and I'm thinking they had the highest payroll the last 9 years.

It's a nice little talking point for those who don't know a fucking thing about baseball.

2. To be fair
I hate the Yankees but they have built a pretty fair minor league system. And if a team is to succeed, they have to be able to bring up younger players when needed. Cabrera, Hughes, and Cano are Yankee farmhands and they are not bad.

this year. I think it's like 13-8 or something like that.

46. Not Rivera...and their "home-grown" talent has been with them for many
years, and therefore their salaries have skyrocketed...you can't keep your home-grown talent locked into the home-grown pay salary forever.

4. Sure does
You think any team wouldn't like to have their payroll but few make enough money to afford them. Of course they fucking are trying to buy them. I live with the NFL owner who tries to do the same fucking thing! And I do know something about baseball. Enough to know that the most talented team rarely actually wins the WS. Why don't you ask Seattle about that?

way to competiveness and 90-plus victories for the last 20 fuck years. What other team has done that, by outspending their nearest competitor by nearly 50%. Bullshit, tru.

when up against the bankroll of the yankees. see the strange case of cc sabathia for an example.

the yankees, and many other big spending teams treat the rest of the league as their own person farm system.

You know that plan you had to ban anybody who refers to your favorite football team, the one owned by that douchebag Jerry Jones, as anything other than the "the Dallas Cowboys," "the Cowboys" or that utterly presumptuous nickname they assumed for reason unknown to me, "America's team>"? You know that plan? Well, just forget about it, bub. The Cowboys are going to get the respect they deserve, which is the kind of respect I gave Bush the Frat Boy for eight years. IMPEACH THE JAIL BIRDS!! And while your at it, give 'em a 49-0 drubbing.

And "America's team"? Really, now. Whose loco idea was it to call them that? They're from Texas, for crying out loud, the place whose idiot governor already thinks it's a foreign country and sometimes I tend to agree with him. Every time Texas voters have a choice between a decent, reform-minded progressive candidate and a dyed-in-the-wool crook, they'll pick the crook, every time. That can't be American (unless, of course, it's Chicago). They are no more America's team than Orly Taitz is Perry Mason.

So just get that idea out of your mind. Or get used to seeing $10K Alice-in-Wonderland chess pieces.

Got it?

26. I can answer 'America's team'
Edited on Mon Nov-02-09 03:12 AM by JonLP24
The people at NFL films came up with the idea for the nickname begin to narrate the 1978 team highlights, they began with They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team."

Since that video the game where the Cowboys played the St Louis Cardinals in 1979 an announcer introduced the Cowboys as "America's Team" and the nickname stuck ever since.

Tom Landry didn't like the nickname at first but he eventually came to like it.

Just answering your question.

28. The Yankees have been in the playoffs
I believe 14 out of the last 15 years....and while money doesn't literally directly buy a championship banner, it does buy access to the playoffs, year after year after year..

The Yankees payroll dwarfs that of other teams. Due to that, they possess a significant competitive advantage before they even step on the field. To say otherwise is just foolish.

31. "while money doesn't literally directly buy a championship banner"
Uh---that's the subject of my OP--- The Championship.

They haven't won a series in almost 10 years. I say that "significant' advantage they get from spending more money does not equate to them winning World Championships...

Baseball is a streak type sport... You could be a team with a low payroll like the Marlins in 2003--20th ranked... and beat a team in the Series with the highest payroll---The Yanks---if you get bot and the other team gets cold.

Sure it helps if you can buy the best players--- but it does not mean you'll win a World series because of it.

37. It's equal in idiocity
to what a drunk said to my brother earlier this year, while leaving after the Yankees beat the clown's favorite team: he bumped into my brother purposely (my brother had on a Yankees shirt), and yelled, "The Yankees suck!" My brother replied, "Wow. That's original. Did you come up with that yourself?" The clown just stared at him. (Had the jackass touched my brother again, he would have spent some time in the ER.)

pumped up their numbers on steroids doesn't mean they aren't trying to buy championships. Their payroll is what, twice the league average or more? What else would they be trying to do spending so much?

44. The Cubs have tried that year after year
and look what that's got them. The Yankee's have a great team spirit. Their players are paid a lot but you can't buy that team mentality which they have in spades. What I would like to know is how do they keep that team spirit up despite the changes in coaching staff? It may just be that Derek Jeter is not only the best player the Yankee's have ever had but the best team captain too.

47. I don't buy that. The Bankees had a payroll 49% higher than the Cubs.
Top 9 payrolls:

Team....................2009 payroll

New York Yankees........$201,449,189
New York Mets...........$149,373,987
Chicago Cubs............$134,809,000
Boston Red Sox..........$121,745,999
Detroit Tigers..........$115,085,145
Los Angeles Angels......$113,709,00
Philadelphia Phillies...$113,004,046
Houston Astros..........$102,996,414
Los Angeles Dodgers.....$100,414,592

Notice something else? Five of these teams made the playoffs (and the Tigers almost did).

Most, but not all, of the time money talks.
