I always root for the New York teams, Mets first as a guy from Queens. It's been painful for the most part. But if you do the math, the Mets in their 40 years have had their fair share of championships.
1986 featured the most entertaining 10th inning in history, and it was a real pleasure to watch it in Massachusetts. I thought it was horrible after Backman and Hernandez made outs, but for some reason just at that moment a spooked look came into the eyes of all the Red Sox fans, and I had trouble understanding why... I figured Carter would get on and then it would be over (that guy is just too arrogant to live through being the last out in a Series).
And then came the obviously inevitable lottery win for the Mets!
I had a great laugh reliving it while watching the HBO special on the Red Sox (written by Steven King, I believe) the other day. It was glorious.
Last year, believe it or not, about two months before the end of the season, I actually thought this:
"I'm sick of the Yankees. I think the Red Sox should pull it off. Just once."
So for one time and one time only in my life, I rooted for the Sox. Call me a whore. I was sure they'd pull it off. And never as certain as when they were down 3-0, because this was the only way the Red Sox were ever going to take it: by being choke-proof. There is no way to choke away victory when you're already down 3-0.
Then again, I also figured this would open a hole in the fabric of American realities, make'em think anything was possible. Bush would lose big and 9/11 would finally break.
Ahem.
