Big Ten suspends Michigan LB
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/09/18/michigan-punch.ap/index.html

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) -- The Big Ten Conference has suspended Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton for one game for punching a Notre Dame player during last week's game.

Video of the incident during Saturday's 38-34 Wolverines victory in Ann Arbor, Mich., spread on the Internet. Mouton appears to swing at the chin of lineman Eric Olsen as they get up from the turf following a play midway through the second quarter.

Big Ten Commissioner James Delaney called the punch "unacceptable."

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said he never saw the punch and that an official would have called any infraction. The Big Ten said the school had accepted the suspension.

No. 25 Michigan (2-0) faces Eastern Michigan (0-2) at home on Saturday.

7. No, the highly recruited Michigan QB. Here is a snippet...
Less than three weeks after Michigan dismissed sophomore slot receiver Justin Feagin for an unspecified violation of team rules, details have surfaced regarding the reasons behind Feagin's ouster.

The Detroit Free Press reported on its Web site Sunday night that Feagin was involved in a failed cocaine deal with a fellow Michigan student that later resulted in the student setting a fire near Feagin's dorm room in March. The student, T.J. Burke, pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony arson and agreed to pay Michigan $14,213. Burke faces up to 10 years in jail.

10. I believe he was recruited as a QB and was going to groom him as such.

11. ...and he was kicked off the team as soon as the coach found out
But, yeah, must be that "rot from the top" or whatever. How long did Hayes put up with Gerald's coke habit in the late 1970's?

17. Non-story, he was kicked off the team
And kicked out of school, I believe, as soon as the coaches found out. What more could they do?

12. I saw video of the punch - the suspension is fine with me
but I can't find video of the Notre Dame player punching him (or possibly someone else) in the stomach. It certainly doesn't rise to the level of that guy Reynolds from Ohio State choking Wisconsin's QB so that he couldn't speak and could barely breathe.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about Feagin being kicked off the team. He should have been. What's the issue?

13. He was suspended also.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (U-WIRE) -- The Ohio State defense will be without a linebacker at Saturday's homecoming game.

Robert Reynolds will not line up against the No. 9 Iowa Hawkeyes because of a one-game suspension. Buckeye coach Jim Tressel announced the suspension Monday, just two days after Reynolds choked Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi.

Reynolds issued an apology to Sorgi and Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez Sunday, saying the action was "not characteristic of Ohio State football."

"As a senior, I have the responsibility to set a better example," he said.

Tressel said he did not think the apology could stand alone, though.

"After getting a first-hand look at the tape and seeing what took place, I feel that the apology by itself is not enough," Tressel said. "Robert's conduct was totally unacceptable and has no place in intercollegiate athletics."

Reynolds is a senior and a second-year starter at the outside linebacker position. He does not have a history of unsportsmanlike conduct with the Buckeyes.

"Having known Rob for three years, I believe this is an isolated incident and out of character for him," Tressel said Sunday.

The Badgers were forced to put in second-string quarterback Matt Schabert following the neck grab. Sorgi told The Associated Press that he had difficulty talking and breathing and was unable to signal calls to other players. It is expected that Sorgi will play Saturday when the Badgers host Purdue. Alvarez, however, told The Associated Press someone else may make the signal calls this week in practice in order to rest Sorgi's voice.

Tressel said he informed Alvarez of the suspension.

"We apologize to Sorgi and the University of Wisconsin for this unfortunate incident," Tressel said. "I know that no one regrets it more than Reynolds."

14. Oh, I know Reynolds was ultimately suspended a game.
(though I watched the post-game interview, in which Tressell lied and said he didn't know anything about it - how could he not? The Wisconsin player had to leave the game). What Reynolds did was far worse than what Mouton did. Reynolds probably should have been suspended for the season.

However, I was also wondering if there was video of Olsen punching Mouton in the stomach.

15. At the post-game interview, Tressel probably did not know.

From the artical..

"After getting a first-hand look at the tape and seeing what took place, I feel that the apology by itself is not enough," Tressel said. "Robert's conduct was totally unacceptable and has no place in intercollegiate athletics."

----

That sure sounds like he didn't know.

I have not seen Reynolds action, so I can't directly comment. Although knowing how you like to embellish things towards any anti-michigan person, I would have to assume Tressel is right on in his assessment of the situation.

16. I watched that game. They showed replays over and over and over.
When they asked Tressell about the incident, he said, "I don't know anything about that". We were both stunned to hear him say that. IIRC, it happened in the 3rd quarter, and the Wisconsin QB had to leave the game. He would have to be remarkably disengaged not to know something had happened. It probably wasn't THE ugliest thing I've ever seen in sports, but it was right up there.

However, I'm still looking for video of the ND player punching Mouton in the stomach!!!!!
