I have never been embarrassed to be an Eagles fan.
Not from throwing snowballs at Santa (he deserved it), not from cheering injuries to opponents (fuck em), not from intimidating opposing fans (this is our house), not from having a jail in my stadium (Hey you have to have somewhere to put those beat up Cowgirl fans). No, I have never been embarrassed or ashamed to be an Eagles fan, until now. The signing of the heinous criminal and dog torturer Michael Vick is appalling to me. First off, what the hell do we even need him for? We have one of the five best QB's in the league in Donovan McNabb and Vick can't play the position. Our backups are better than him. Secondly, why bring this shame to our city? The Eagles under Lurie have always been a team that prides themselves on only having character guys on the squad and this is the ultimate in hypocrisy. The moral high ground they have been able to claim has just washed out from under them. This signing makes no sense on any level. We let beloved iconic and classy Eagle players like Brian Dawkins, John Runyan and Tre Thomas go claiming money issues and yet we have money to sign this fucking torturing, lying asshole? I just don't get it. I'm embarrassed and ashamed and it's going to be really hard for me to get it up for this team this year. And to our credit, most of the fanbase feels the same way. Talk about putting a damper on enthusiasm, they just made Philly the center of an ugly, distracting and completely unnecessary circus.

I'm sickened.

I expect people in every city to be civil and not beat the crap out of people because they root for a different football team. I expect people not to cheer when people get seriously injured. I guess I'm expecting too much.

35. I had a great day on that Super Bowl.
The Bears have always been my 2nd favorite team, and it was clear to any one who wasn't a homer that the Pats were going to get crushed. The Pats had done well to get there but were clearly over matched by the Bears. I was giving up to 16 points to rope people into betting on the Pats. My wallet got a lot fatter that week, so that Super Bowl brings good memories to me. I made more money off that game than any other single game I've ever bet on because I was literally surrounded by eager takers. The only person who wouldn't take the bet was my best friend, because the Bears are his favorite team. He hated the Pats back then.

I debated betting on the Rams when the Pats faced them in the SB, just because it's the Patriots and I never thought I'd see them win a Super Bowl. Glad I didn't.

19. Wow. I couldn't have said it any better.
I spent all day listening to WIP. I've known Anthony Gargano for a long time (we have mutual friends and grew up in the same area). He was stunned by this as well. I talked to some dudes at the Wawa, as well as in a news shop (since every single Wawa I went to, was out of The Daily News newspapers). Not one person is pleased with this.

Philly and Philly metro folks are all about their sports teams. I think that Eagles fans feel disillusioned after dealing with the loss of a class act player and mentor to the team (Brian Dawkins), only to turn around and hire a convicted criminal. While the fans may be notorious for being less than classy, the team had always strived to stand by their reputation for having "character" players.

Yesterday, everything changed. And I don't know what that means for the team, or the fans.

All I know is that I'm confused, angry, and embarrassed. It sucks. :(

The Cowboys have been in a ditch for quite awhile, that's obvious. It's only natural that we fans cling to the glory days.

And Jerry Jones is still there. Say what you want, he did put together 3 SB winners despite his subsequent failures.

I am very confused on a lot of levels with this. I think Vick deserves a second chance, just not with my team. I don't want my team to have to deal with the distraction and the karma. Probably makes me an effin hypocrite, but that's how I feel.

Part of me looks at it just from the standpoint of the game and that this could have tremendous upside if it works. And as excited as that makes me, I feel guilty about even thinking that way.

I understand how Eagles fans who are against this must feel. I can't go all the way with some of it, but I understand. I get that. Again, I don't want my team doing this. What Vick has done is beyond the pale.

But I am also a liberal, if not a Christian. I honestly believe that the door to reformation is never closed either here or in the hereafter. I am in no position to judge Michael Vick. I am sickened by his crimes, but working in the criminal justice system as I do, I have to say that he has paid the price that the system ordered him to pay. And he will pay much more for the rest of his life in ways we cannot imagine (and some of us WILL NOT imagine).

So I am confused today, because I want my team to win. Prior to this signing, I would have said that I would want them to do anything possible to win the Super Bowl. But this might be a bridge too far, even for a guy who bleeds Eagle Green like I do. Time will tell how this all plays out. But I long for the day where the team I love will be known for their exploits on the field and not for this surreal signing.

Vick did serve his time, he is legally redeemed and does have the right to play. If it were any other team I could probably care less, but since it's Philly, watching the circus/meltdown commence has been enjoyable. And it will only get worse.

Vick intentionally killed and tortured animals for six years. Big difference. One is an accident, one is intentional. If Donte went on a six year torture and killing spree he'd be hated too.

70. Well he got a light sentence because it was the deceased guy's fault.
And if he hadn't been slightly above the legal limit he wouldn't have been charged at all. So no, it's not murder, not even close. It was an accident. Nothing accidental about what Vick did.

71. I can assure you that the courts care very much about intent. n/t.

73. Continue to hate after he's paid his legal debt to society?
Do we continue to hate this man after time served? Yes, he committed a crime and even admitted it. He didn't deny he did what he did, nor did he hire some fancy attorney to prove he was innocent. He was guilty, sentenced and released. The NFL has given this man a rare second chance. Why in the world can't we? Stallworth and Vick are two different situations.

72. Alternative motive to hate Vick?
I'm confused as well why so many people literally claim to HATE Vick. This man has served his time, if you have an issue with that, take it up with the judge. Vick will continue to be harassed and ridiculed for his actions. Why can't we simply allow this man to come back to work without the devine hate? I'm convinced there's an alternative motive here - and I believe race has much to do with it.

74. You need to read about the psychology
of people who torture animals. Its indicative of deep personality flaws...even sociopathy. Something that doesn't go away after serving one's time.
Its analgous to the feeling people have for pedophiles who are released from prison. You know that they've served their time but that doesn't mean that the underlying psychological problems have gone away.

BTW, Stallworth is black too so how can this be a race thing?
