Singletary's tough 49er camp
S.F. Chronicle, 8-2-09

As promised, coach Mike Singletary had his players using their shoulder pads for their intended purpose as the 49ers went through their first practice of training camp Saturday morning.

Little more than a half-hour into the two-hour session, Singletary put the players through an old-school "nutcracker" drill, not to be confused with Tchaikovsky's holiday-themed Nutcracker suite.

"It's leverage, it's using your legs, moving your feet," the coach said. "In a game, the fourth quarter, the fundamentals always come back. We had some guys that did OK."

Offensive and defensive players faced off in a 2-yard gantlet between blocking pads and went at it, head to head, shoulder pads to shoulder pads, and may the best man win. It was football at its most fundamental, featuring low pad level, forceful contact, legs pumping.

2. Not impressed.
I think the Patriots had been in pads for every practice up to this afternoon - they had a off limits to the public walkthrough session Sunday afternoon. Who knows? Maybe BB made "pad up" for that, too!

"FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots held their seventh overall practice of training camp this morning (9:30-11:15) and were once again in full pads. That is seven straight practices in full pads to start camp."

3. Most of those have been two a days as well.
Still, this is the attitude Singletary brings, and one they need. I hope he does well.

4. It's a start for the 'niners, for sure.
I hope Singletary does well, too. As for the Pats, BB sent a pretty loud message to the team. He was not happy with last year's preseason effort.

6. A little intensity is good (as long as no one gets hurt)
what the 49ers should be concerned about is when their much hyped number one pick gets signed. As I understand it he wants to get top 5 money even though he wasn't drafted in the top 5.
