Ortiz wants season long ban for cheaters

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- David Ortiz wants players who test positive for steroids to be suspended from baseball for a year instead of the current 50-game penalty.

Taking players to court, though, for cases involving use of the substances before players were subject to penalty is not the way to clean up the game, the Boston Red Sox designated hitter said Monday.

6. If anyone tests positive now that it's illegal (like Manny) I agree
A one year suspension at the very least. And none of this rehabbing in the minors crap.

8. Yeah, But. . .
There should be something in the CBA that says the contract is null and void if one tests positive. The teams sign these guys to HUGE salaries but if the guy gets suspended and comes back "clean" he won't be the player they signed for all that money.

So, one year; then the contract is null and void. After a year, somone can pay him (with the existing team having right of first refusal). But, he would get paid what he's likely to be worth if he's NOT juiced.

Have them renegotiate after the suspension.

I like that.

That would never get approved by the union, though.

10. That's Why I Said, Next CBA
And, MLB could negotiate this point (and this point only) through the media. Remember Fehr and his successor are already PE #1 on steroids after that display in Congress.

They try to block the ability of the owners to declare a contract null and void based upon fraud on the part of the player and the public wrath will be immense.

The owners should at least try to get this as point one.
