Damn football player!
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth(notes) began serving a 30-day jail sentence Tuesday for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida, a punishment made possible by his cooperation with investigators and the fervent wish by the victim’s family to put the matter behind them.

Stallworth, 28, received the sentence after pleading guilty to a DUI manslaughter charge for striking and killing Mario Reyes while driving drunk March 14 in his black 2005 Bentley. The athlete also reached a confidential financial settlement with the family of the 59-year-old construction worker.

Without the plea deal, the DUI manslaughter conviction could have netted Stallworth 15 years in prison. After his release from jail, he must serve two years of house arrest and spend eight years on probation. The house arrest provisions will allow him to resume his football career, his attorney said.

5. You'd be in jail because you couldn't provide a "confidential financial settlement". . .
to the dead man's family. A settlement you could best make by being free to ply your trade.

Odd, that justice would take a backseat to a family's financial desires. I hope this fulfills society's need, and that Mr Stallworth gets the help he needs.

3. it sucks .... it is awful ..... but
the deal Stallworth made with his victims family will never take the hurt away but
all their "bills" for life will be paid. The NFL has already took the 2009 season away
and if he ever plays in the league again 70% of his pay will go to the victims family.

Plus Stallworth will have to wake up every day in his own hell.

In jail rotting or out paying back his victims family?

7. where did you pull your numbers from?
your ass? if he really did make an agreement to pay the family 70% of his future earnings, that is bullshit. The family doesn't deserve that much.

10. His salary is 5.15 million per year ...
He just signed a new 3 year contract extension right before the accident. Although the only guaranteed money was for 2009 and any
up front bonus money he got. With the average career in the NFL being 3 years and just for the sake of argument he plays for 3 more years
that would 15 million $s and am pretty sure that the victim's family got a settlement in excess of $10,000,000 + legal fees and court costs
he will be spending easily 70% of his salary.

From what the league office has ruled it looks like he will be out for at least part if not all of the 2009 season.

As a Brown's fan I hope they cut him .... he sucked last year too .... but as a nice guy I hope he hooks up w/ another team so he
can pay the family.

hugs n kisses!

9. family reached financial settlement. He paid his way out of it.
Otherwise, the family would be screaming about this light sentence. Guess the money was more important to them.

8. Two years of house arrest?
So, what?

They're gonna hold their practices in his house?

And he gets to go to all the games, and play in them?

But then he has to go RIGHT HOME, right?

I don't know what that is, but that's not house arrest where I come from.

If it enables him to earn and compensate the victim's family, though, I'm in favor of it.

Still, calling it "house arrest" is laughable. Why not just put him on probation?

13. The Vick story got overplayed to drown out Bush's shortcomings.
Same for Congreff going after steroids in sports and other stuff.
It was an attempt to drown out Bush's lying America into war and other treasons.
