Speaking of Torture - The Christianising of Europe
Loving Your Neighbour? – Killing Your Opponents!

Christians get a lot of mileage out of the aphorism of 'turning the other cheek', a sentiment originating at least as early as Pythagoras in the fifth century BC. Yet both in theory and in practice, Christians have honoured the principle of murdering their opponents. The word, it seems, came from the very top. Apparently Jesus himself said:

"But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me."
– Luke 19.27 *

1. It is so useful to misrepresent Jesus
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 07:44 AM by kwassa
This quote pops up from time to time, but these are not the words expressing the beliefs of Jesus, but the words of a character in a parable that Jesus is telling to his followers.

Quoting it out of context changes the meaning quite completely.

Illuminating the terrifying history of a morbid cult that destroyed the ancient world

Christianity was the first creed in history to exterminate its adversaries in the name of love.

7. Go back and read the passage
Jesus here is saying that the earthly NOBLEMAN who became King would tell the servants to go and bring those against him to be killed, as earthly kings tend to do - ITS a PARABLE.

If you are going to try and start something, at least get a good passage. There are plenty of koans in the Bible..enough to spin a zen master's head.
