Catholic League “Adopt an Atheist" campaign begins.
Approximately 80 percent of Americans are Christian, and 96 percent celebrate Christmas. Of the 20 percent who are not Christian, non-believers make up the largest segment, though the number of self-identified atheists is tiny. David Silverman, president of American Atheists, knows this to be true, which is why he is frantically trying to inflate his base. “We want people to realize that there may be atheists in their family,” he told the New York Times, “even if those atheists don’t even know they are atheists.”

We think there is some merit in David’s idea, even if he has things backwards, as usual. Today we are launching our “Adopt An Atheist” campaign, the predicate of which is, “We want atheists to realize that there may be Christians in their community, even if those Christians don’t even know they are Christian.”

Here’s what our campaign entails. We are asking everyone to contact the American Atheist affiliate in his area , letting them know of your interest in “adopting” one of them. All it takes is an e-mail. Let them know of your sincere interest in working with them to uncover their inner self. They may be resistant at first, but eventually they may come to understand that they were Christian all along.

If we hurry, these closeted Christians can celebrate Christmas like the rest of us. As an added bonus, they will no longer be looked upon as people who “believe in nothing, stand for nothing and are good for nothing.”

I had no idea, that one can be a christian and not even KNOW it! Here I was, think that one had to accept jesus as one's personal savior, a conscious decision. Must be one of those "OTHER WAYS OF KNOWING"!!!!

And isn't "adoption" usually associated with children? Perhaps the Catholic League should have thought that over a bit more, considering that the institution they support is riddled with child-rapists and people that hide and protect them....

2. This has to be a satire. Surely, there is no such effort by the CL, is there?
Oh my, after clicking the link, it looks as though the CL is really rolling out an "Adopt an Atheist" campaign. I hope someone contacts me so that I can explain how foolish the campaign is.

3. Gosh, I wasn't aware I was looked upon as "...stand for nothing and are good for nothing.”
Even though I'm not a "closeted christian" I still celebrate christmas- it's all about the presents!!
This is just odd. Don't they have anything better to do?

6. This is why I stopped reading The Onion; the real news is
goofier than the fake news. But if someone wants to adopt me, here's the deal. I get my own room, use of the car anytime I want, a fat allowance and I get to set my own bedtime. Any takers?

7. Ah, c'mon. You know Catholics aren't into that "you must be saved" business.
That's a Protestant meme!

To Catholics, its all about fealty to the Church and its Hierarchy.

The Pope is God. Worship the pope, tithe to the Vatican, listen to everything those right-wing bishops say, and let your children spend time with your priest -- unsupervised, of course.

I wonder how many Catholics condemn dead-dunking while praising this. I also wonder how many of them went to Catholic school or CCD and forked over their money for "Pagan Babies".

11. Hey, Catholic Churches ... try doing an "Adopt an Unwanted Fetus"
campaign ... and fund it with all that (Na*i) gold you have there in the Vatican ...

Just don't make it a commercial ... make it a priority that your psychotically anti-choice people MUST adopt an "unwanted" fetus, and make sure it survives through the unplanned pregnancy (with the best of health care) and is under a family until it reaches its 18th birthday ...

12. Wow
I could not believe this was serious, and thought it must be a satire from an atheist site. But I went to the Catholic League site and there it was. 'People who believe in nothing, stand for nothing and are good for nothing.' Charming!

I don't think Catholics are as concerned as Protestants with 'accepting Jesus as one's personal saviour'; it is more a matter of observing certain rules, belonging to a community, and accepting the authority of the Pope. In the jargon of late 20th century sociology, perhaps one could say that Catholicism is more collectivist, and Protestantism, at least in some of its forms, more individualist.

Although my country has been marked by internecine hatreds between Catholicism and Protestantism (reaching the point at times of local terrorism and even civil war), I had never until recently associated contemporary Catholicism with such hatred for atheists - is this an American phenomenon, or is it connected with attitudes of the current Pope. Certainly, Catholics whom I know personally do *not* have this attitude. But there are a few current 'Torygraph' writers who do.

15. Creation Studies Institute goes one further with their "Adopt an Atheist Prayer Movement"
They actually identify and attempt to describe the atheists they want the IDiots to pray for.

Adopt an Atheist Prayer Movement

As God’s dearly beloved children, we are instructed to pray for all men. In the Sermon of the Mount, the Messiah confronted the superficial religiosity of the spiritual leaders of His day by going beyond the letter of the Law and holding them accountable to the Spirit of the Law. It was no longer sufficient to love your neighbor as revealed in the Mosaic Covenant. The instructions of the New Covenant would require God’s adopted children to be God-like, Christ-like in their desire to see the salvation of all men, even their enemies, II Peter 3:9.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? Matt. 5:43-46

So we are beginning a brand new campaign at the Creation Studies Institute. We are calling on all of our supporters to join our “Adopt an Atheist Prayer Movement” by praying for the salvation of these men and women.

As an added bonus, they will no longer be looked upon as people who “believe in nothing, stand for nothing and are good for nothing.”

Bashing us is supposed to entice us to join them? They're like an abusive partner or parent who beats you until you give in and comply with their demands.

And isn't "adoption" usually associated with children?

Yes, but that's what they see us as--what they see anybody who hasn't submitted to them 100% as. Hence all of the twaddle about how they know what's best for us and they're going to give it to us whether we want it or not.

seek an immediate emancipation in the American courts.

I will not be a slave to bigotry nor to all that the Catholic church has done in the last 2 Milenia.

A pretty poor record ethics or virtue.
