Pressure by ultra-Orthodox Jews takes women off ads for organ donor campaign
From http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/pressure-by-ultra-orthodox-jews-takes-women-off-ads-for-organ-donor-campaign-1.394268">Haaretz:
The recent removal of images of women from bus ads in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak encouraging Israelis to sign organ donor cards has sparked protest, with some people threatening to revoke their agreement to donate organs after their death.

--snip--

Last week, Canaan Pirsum Bitnuah, the advertising agency handling the bus ads, which feature the faces of men and women, asked ADI for permission to replace the ads on buses in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak with ones showing men only.

"The photos showed only the women's faces; there were no exposed shoulders or anything at all provocative. But we were warned that if we didn't change the images, the buses might be burned," ADI spokeswoman Dvora Sherer said.

She explained that when a 2007 campaign had featured the image of an organ donor with her infant son, Jerusalem billboards with the ad had been vandalized and one bus had been set on fire.

Ok, that's just straight-up unreal. We're talking about ads for organ donation for shit's sake...

:wtf:

1. So an Israeli ad agency doesn't just negotiate with terrorists; it gives in to them completely?
You'd have thought Israelis wouldn't submit to threats of violence quite so easily.

4. Secular or moderate religious Jews in Israel are huge targets for the ultra-Right.
It's a bad situation right now.

2. So does that bigotry extend to where a male religious fundamentalist needs a kidney,
he'll refuse the organ if it came from a woman?

3. Religious Fanaticism is the same, regardless of the religion.
Fanatics are just plain nuts, whatever their religious beliefs. It comes with the territory.

5. Recently (last couple months) in NYC there were signs put up by Orthodox Jews
that said something to the effect of "women get out of the way when a man wants to walk on the sidewalk". They were told by city officials they had to take them down, not because they were sexist, but because they are not allowed to nail them to trees. Ugh.

My boss said there's a section in Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, where there is an Orthodox Jewish community and all the women have the same hair because they have to wear wigs so as not to show their hair in public. What fucking century are we living in???

..."Pastoral" desert religions.

They have no place in the modern world and as more
and more people are figuring that out, they're lashing
out in rage and terror.
