City’s Oldest Jewish Bagel Shop Saved By Two Muslim Cabbies
November 4, 2011 1:39 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The oldest Jewish bagel shop in New York City has been rescued by two Muslim cab drivers.

Peerzada Shah, who attended culinary school in Manhattan after immigrating from Pakistan, and Zafaryab Ali recently took over the 91-year-old Coney Island Bialys and Bagels.

Ali worked as a baker at the Coney Island Avenue store for 11 years before leaving five years ago to earn more dough driving a cab.

When he heard the shop was in danger of closing, he immediately contacted his former roommate and decided to pull together to save the store.

I don't care about the bagels but their bialys must be saved.

8. The traditional
hand rolled, water boiled bagels are harder and harder to find in the city.
The commercial ones, like Lenders, use steam and are not true bagels.
Glad this one is saved.

10. Lenders at least have the cement donut texture down
and they're the only acceptable thing out here in the Wild West. The other "bagels" out here are soft rolls with holes in the middle, really disappointing.
