Attention mainstream Christians: Be fruitful and amplify
Filed: Tuesday, September 27, 2011
By Wayne Besen

Last week’s column, “Mainstream Christians Must Stand Up to the Religious Right,” caused quite a stir. E-mail flooded into my in-box and there was much online discussion.

“…the number of mainstream Christians fighting the hate campaigns of the religious right is disappointing,” I wrote. “With thousands of churches, millions of members, and a vested interest in fighting back against religious extremism, they have consistently underachieved and failed to reach their potential.”

There were generally four reactions to the column:

The first was from non-believers who completely dismissed religious people as loopy and seemed ambivalent to their assistance in fighting the right

4. And that's the 700 pound gorilla in the room.
Seems like EVERY Christian thinks their church is "mainstream." Yet give the results of multiple surveys over the decades, we know which Christian beliefs are mainstream. And sadly, they aren't the liberal ones. If liberal Christians could just acknowledge this and realize that they are a minority fighting against a majority, that it's not the media conspiracy keeping their message from the masses, I think they could be a lot more effective. As it is now, a lot of liberal Christians think that because they go to their church and hear a sermon they like on Sunday morning, that is enough.
