1. The stupid...it burns.
Our species does not deserve to continue.

What really sucks is that the caller actually believes that 'creation science' is real science.
It doesn't matter what we tell him and show him, he will continue to use 'facts' that make no sense so
as to try and make the world fit his creationist view. They don't understand anything about science.

'Carbon dating can't explain gold or uranium' (very paraphrased)
I just wish I could violently shake these people every time they spout out one of their arguments like the carbon dating crap.

They make my head hurt. Our country needs to right its course when it comes to education.
I was a TA for an intro geo course ages ago. It was for non-science majors and so I expected a minimal level of prior science classes (High School stuff)
It was worse than I could have ever expected. I had one student that could not use a ruler to measure the distance between two points.
He started to try measuring the distances to arbitrary points so as to perform some weird trig which I seriously doubt he understood.
When I showed him how to do it correctly, he had this light bulb look as though he finally understood how to use the neat little stick with numbers along the sides.

While I'm happy to have reached him and taught him a useful skill, I was ultimately saddened as there were throngs of students like him and it got worse every year.

2. I feel your pain
"I had one student that could not use a ruler to measure the distance between two points."

I teach high school earth science & biology. The lack of basic skills, literacy, logic, and math is jaw-dropping.

3. For those of you who are unable/willing to listen
here are a few snippets of Creationist 'proof' that evolution is not real

#1) You cannot add energy to a closed system and DECREASE entropy. Therefore, you cannot add energy (?) to an amoeba and get a higher life form.

#2) Species do not change. (A&O asked what about viruses? caller was mum)

#3) DNA analysis has shown that all of humanity's most recent common ancestor lived 6 to 10k years ago.

<after 3 min, one of the hosts mutters "I cant do this anymore" like his head was going to burst. Curse words ensued>

#4) You have different elements @ different levels of the earth and you cant explain how they got there by carbon-dating

<editors note: if none of these make sense, please dont shoot the messenger, Im only relaying what THEY say...>

Man I cant do this anymore. This is seriously painful...

4. That's painful.
When I was teaching, I occasionally took on a freshman comp class. We used a book that presented pro-and con- readings on various controversial issues, and I would typically assign students to write on whichever position they didn't personally hold. We always discussed the issue in class, and I always walked them through a brainstorming session covering both sides.

When it came to evolution, the ignorance was astounding. I once had a Catholic student tell me he didn't believe in evolution because he was a good Catholic and followed the teachings of his church. I sent him to the library to research the church's actual position, and he came back chagrined. The fact that human and chimpanzee DNA are about 98% identical was news to everyone. Maybe 5% knew what carbon dating was and even fewer that there are other radioactive processes used to determine dates. I have no idea what they were being taught in high school science classes, except that it pretty obviously wasn't science.

5. How do we get these people to understand the earth is a lot older than
6,000 to 10,000 years old?
