Self-validation at the expense of others also seems pointless and divisive.

However, I imagine there is truth in the adage that we quite often hold others to a higher standard than we hold ourselves to.

17. I wonder
too.

What is the point...

And what is the point when someone announces his/her Christianity like it's supposed to be some kind of guarantee that s/he is a good and honorable person.

Someone is accused of being a thief..."Judge, I'm a GOOD CHRISTIAN WOMAN!!! I would never do something like that!!"

It's like Christians, by being Christians, are somehow better than everybody else. Especially total nonbelievers.

Jews can't be honest and honorable. Muslims can't be honest and honorable. And there's no way in hell an Atheist can be honest and honorable!

I know Christians who would have scoffed at the May 21st Rapture silliness, but who still emit undertones of something like superiority over my Agnostic/Atheistic self. Like I'm just some dumb creature to be pitied.

Geez...why do I hate Religion in general, and Christianity in particular?

:eyes:

37. I agree, to some extent...
Just like the "K & R if you ___________" threads.

Or the "Please help me DU this poll" threads.

OR the "Let's all boycott _______" threads.

They're all pointless too, and I've sometimes gone in and said so.

But the part I find disagreeable is how Christians feel they have to constantly advertise their faith. How they have to unite because they are so "persecuted", even though they appear not to know the meaning of the word. In fact, according to one definition of the word...

2. to annoy with persistent or urgent approaches (as attacks, pleas, or importunities) : pester

it's disbelievers and people of other faiths who are being persecuted by Christians who annoy, pester, or plead with us to believe what they do. Or when Christians want to run the country based on their religious beliefs like the rest of us don't have any rights at all to live our own lives free from religious tomfoolery.

Even some of my less extreme Christian friends have some strange ideas.

Not something I'd be proud of...

13. Yes, well I don't know why we need to check-in?
This past week has been ridiculous. Christians do not need this sort of notoriety. Can't we sustain ourselves within our own spirituality without creating such a scene? The preachers talking about rapture, the Kansas group demonstrating at soldiers' gravesites, and the Florida showmaster burning a Koran make us all look unbalanced and wild-assed. Enough of this, I say. I'm almost ready to ban religion if it keeps getting this crazy.

Edited on Mon May-23-11 03:39 PM by DevonRex
It says that ALL people will be forgiven their sins and be admitted to heaven. So of course it was excluded from the bible, in preference for the severe and misogynist and homophobic Paul.

Glad to meet another person who shares my disdain for Pail, too. :hi:

45. "Only an atheist can be a good Christian. Only a Christian can be a good atheist"

"An interview with Jürgen Moltmann" by Miroslav Volf
in Communities of faith and radical discipleship edited by G. McLeod Bryan
Mercer University: Macon 1986
... Bloch has written a book about atheism and Christianity; it first appeared with the subtitle "Only an Atheist Can Be a Good Christian." I mentioned that it should be the other way around: only a Christian can be a good atheist. Bloch then used that statement as the second subtitle of his book. He meant that only an atheist who does not worship false religious and economic gods can be a good Christian. I meant that only a Christian who believes in the crucified Jesus is free from the pressure to create gods and idols for himself. On this issue Bloch and I have come near to each other ...
