Does anyone except Orthodox Jews actually follow the Ten Commandments?
I think we probably all know most of the 10 commandments but there are two that I haven't heard much discussion about...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a commandment against worshiping graven images? Wouldn't that rule out crosses, crucifixes and statues?

Then there's the commandment to observe the Sabbath. From what I know Orthodox Jews have very strict rules that prohibit them from switching on lights, driving or going to work on Saturdays?

Now Glenn Beck was recently blabbering on about the 10 commandments...so if he really believes in them he should be held to observe them. That would include skipping work at Fox News and staying home today.

1. I thought there were eleven commandments
Catholics and Protestants have nine commandments in common, but diverge on the tenth commandment.

I remember when I was nine and my fresh-faced eighteen year old catechism teacher answered my question: "Covet thy neighbor's wife--what does that mean, teacher?". She said it was like the previous commandment: thou shall not covet thy neighbor's property, which she explained as "stealing".

So I started contemplating stealing Mrs. Psychniak, she with the big ankles and all.

4. The eleventh commandment is "Don't get caught."
I lived by that rule and taught it to my child and grandchildren.

2. Well I haven't killed, stolen or screwed my neighbor
At least not lately.

I dunno, last time I read them, I think I was in the ballpark.

I am a pretty flagrant violator on that whole Sunday rule though.

3. I'm sure you're pretty moderate...
I'm talking about "Biblical Christians" who want the Ten Commandments to be the foundation of a theocracy. I'd like to see Beck challenged and asked if he follows them all. I know he'll have excuses but he should at least be made to defend his blatherings.

5. I'm pretty sure no one follows all of them anymore.
1) Worship no god other than the Abrahamic god: Sure people still do that.
2) Make no molten gods: Some people still do that.
3) Observe Passover: Jews still do that.
4) Sacrifice the first-born of every animal: Pretty sure no one still does that.
5) Rest every seventh day: it's subject to interpretation.
6) Observe Shavuot and Sukkot: Observant Jews still do.
7) Men appear before the Abrahamic god three times a year: Since the reward for it hasn't been happening, I have to assume that it isn't being done.
8) Don't mix sacrificial blood with anything leavened and finish the entire passover dinner before morning: Pretty sure this isn't followed.
9) Sacrifice the first produce of your crops: Not sure, but I think some Orthodox groups still do this.
10) Don't boil a goat in its mother's milk: I don't know anyone who does.

So, let's call it 6-7/10 still being followed by some people.

6. Everyone is always trying to tell me how to boil goats.
"Don't boil goats in its mother's milk."

"Don't boil goats alive."

"Don't boil other people's goats without permission."

"Don't boil goats you are currently having sex with."

The list goes on and on.

7. Orthodox Jews are supposed to follow 613 commandments
Edited on Sat Nov-28-09 11:58 PM by Meshuga
Well, not all 613 but the ones they can follow since some are not possible to follow in modern days. But in the Jewish point of view, these commandments are for Jews to follow. Not for non-Jews to follow.

The 10 commandments controversy is just convenient bullshit promoted by the Glenn Becks of the world to keep people from discussing real issues. It seems crazy that people fall for this crap and support the right wing bullshit as opposed to getting angry at them for focusing on stupidity. You would think that people without a job and health care would get angry at these assholes.

On edit: fixed the wrong number of commandments.

10. Depends on how strictly you define "follow".
My church tried its best.

No crosses or statues. The few times we met in a regular church pieces of black cloth appeared to cover the pre-existing accoutrements. We had no symbols or icons or anything to focus the concentration or look at.

We kept the sabbath on Friday night/Saturday, but most Orthodox would have said we didn't. We didn't work, most of us didn't cook. On the other hand, we didn't use the rabbinic list of rules. Turning on a light didn't strike us as 'servile work' so we turned on lights. We drove. We didn't shop or do schoolwork or work at a job. Note that the rabbinic list is *not* in the Torah, so it's an open question as to whether that's the One True Interpretation. We also kept the OT holy days--from Passover to Sukkoth and the Last Great Day of the Feast (you know, the one on which Jesus blessed the children).

In the interests of not murdering it was pacifist. Even during WWII.

Presumably we failed the first commandmnet since we had Jesus as God. On the other hand, we considered that the real "break" would be believing in God the Father, since we saw Jesus as being the incarnation of Yahweh. So when Jesus quoted the OT, he was quoting himself.
