Do you know how to spot a counterfeit Bible?
http://www.av1611.org/kjv/counterfeit.html
Many people write and ask about a certain version of the Bible. With over 200 different English versions available and a new one coming out every 6 months, it’s difficult to individually separate Satan’s counterfeits from the Word of God.

We created 25 simple checks to spot one of Satan’s counterfeits.

If any Bible version fails any one of the following tests – it is one of Satan’s counterfeits. You can click on any of the check verses to display the authentic Word of God for comparison.

Note: This is by no means ALL the fraud and corruption found in the counterfeits. There are thousands of such distortions. This is a simple and quick checklist.

5. Yep, the only *true* Christians use the KJV.
That's what my former boss (who happened to be Baptist) told me.

The KJV is one of Satan's best counterfeits.. Even has the mark of the beast right on the front cover.

The New King James is a COUNTERFEIT from HELL itself!

It's always fun to point out that the man who commissioned their favorite Bible was in all probability decidedly fond of their favorite "abomination" in Leviticus.

12. And most of it's crap
ASIDE from the questions of whether God and Satan exist, the inerrancy of the Bible, etc., it's pretty much simply a guide for conservative Protestant political correctenss. Any serious student of the Bible almost HAS to learn Attic Greek (i.e., from Attica), Aramaic (i.e., early Hebrew), and Latin.

For example, the word we read as "hell" in the KJV was used metaphorically in several senses. There were also several different words that were translated as "hell". But this page of tests only admits the fire-and-brimstone hell. The original uses invoked the Underworld (Hades), the grave (death), loneliness, rejection, purification, and finally, the idea of unspeakable horror to illustrate extremes.

"God" can cross-translate as God, Word, Daddy, Master, Spirit, Ghost, "We Gods" (Elohim), Generative Holiness, and even "It".

None of these things should detract from the communicated meaning of the text, UNLESS the reader is pursuing his or her own agenda.

And, of course, there's the original issue of whether you accept any of this as true, or even important, in any form.

15. The "Word of God" was Christ, not a book.
But for people like this, it's changed to literally worshipping a book. Better (to them) a rule-book, with sharp lines separating the "ins" and "outs".

18. Because King James said so.
"The evidence is overwhelming that the origin of "King James Onlyism" is therefore not some over-zealous modern defender of the Authorized Version, it is King James himself."

http://www.av1611.org/vance/kjv_only.html

Browsing that site reveals a bit of deification of King James.

24. The King James translation was based on the knowledge available in the 1600s
Since then, scholars have learned a lot more about the original languages and have found older texts than were available to the King James committee.

(NOTE: I wonder if the all the King James fanatics know that King James himself was gay.)

26. If they're really worried, they can learn NT Greek and read the original NT.
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 04:09 PM by knitter4democracy
Oh wait, that would mean learning a foreign language, and we can't have that, now can we. :eyes:

People who freak out about that sort of thing miss the point entirely: read it however you can assimilate what's in it, and then put what you've read into practice. I don't care which version you read as long as you understand it and can follow it.

For example, my favorite novel is considered an unfinished text, so there are questions on which version is the most authentic for translators to follow. That's all well and good, but it's just a darn good novel, so I'm going to read what translation I like best. The Bible is a created text, put together by council from copies of copies of copies of the epistles and books, so there really is no truly authentic version. Just read it already.

Edited for grammar/mechanical errors.
