Will Benedict XVI inspire a breakaway Catholic Church?
http://www.eternalnight.co.uk/books/c/cordymichael/lucifer.html

"Lucifer" by Michael Cordy is one of my favourite novels. One of the main subplots in this book focuses on the Red Pope, leader of the Church for Soul Truth. The Red Pope and his followers have broken away from the Vatican due to its conservative dogma. The death of John Paul II, a conservative but very charismatic and fatherly, had the hearts and minds of many millions of Catholics. However, I don't see Benedict XVI having this same type of charisma and hold on people. I see his conservative dogmatism being very repellent to many Catholics, especially those from the Western World. So do you see a breakaway Catholic Church merging from this?

I encourage you to check out the Lucifer book as it's a very compelling and gripping read.

1. Happens all the time. It doesn't matter all that much.
They just aren't big enough to gain tons of notice, and besides, ever since churches were disestablished, nobody really cares except the participants.

2. In that novel, the split was so big as to threaten the Vatican
So if America, Canada and some Western European countries form a major movement, could that work?

Threaten the Vatican? And that means....what?

Nothing much to those in protestant denominations that already threaten the Vatican, or to no or other religions who don't care.

Since churchs stopped being official, splits stopped mattering. As long as it stays that way, I'm satisfied.
