Spare the rod...

A good Christian father works hard to educate his 13 year old son in the ways of Our Lord Jesus. He sends the boy to Greenville Christian Academy and Trinity Baptist School, and for Summer vacation, he ties him to a tree:

Brice McMillan, 41, told Edgecombe County deputies last week that he tied his son to a tree in the family's yard at 1110 Felton Farm Road and forced him to sleep outside Tuesday and Wednesday nights because he was misbehaving, the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office said.

Stepmother Sandra McMillan, 36, found Tyler unresponsive around 4:30 p.m. Thursday after being tied to the tree since Wednesday night. He was pronounced dead at Heritage Hospital in Tarboro.

1. Tie him to the same tree
Leave him there for the same length of time under the same conditions

2. Nah. Lock them in solitary, and every day have a US soldier come in and stomp on their Bible.
And don't forget the chicken cacciatore. That's the humane American way.

3. Evidently being "educated in the ways of Our Lord"
includes being tied to a tree without food and water. His Lord Jesus is evidently one cruel S.O.B.

4. I don't think we can blame the Jesus dude for this one.
They may have blamed Jesus, but I suspect, even though I'm not a believer, that the real Jesus would despise them as virulently as we do.

10. Maybe they were trying to crucify him, believing that imitation is
the sincerest form of flattery.

5. From someone who does not consider himself a Christian,
how does it get branded as being even fundamentalist Christian that some nutjob twists the religion that way? This is certainly not even remotely something that is commonly practiced in even by fundamentalist Christians. There are some fundamentalist Muslims who twist their religion who are not representative of fundamentalist Muslims as a whole. We ought not to paint with such a broad brush.

8. I know fundamentalist Christians and that kind of behavior is in no way typical.
Even if a church were to teach "spare the rod and spoil the child" does not give license for somebody to commit child abuse and I don't believe that a church that teaches that ever intends child abuse to be committed. There are many kinds of schools and camps, that does not make them representative of all fundamentalist Christians.

11. Dominionists (aka Christian Reconstructionists) preach something even better:
stoning misbehaving children to death. Because it's in the bible.
