Bishop accuses gays of 'conspiracy' against the Catholic Church
A Catholic bishop has accused the gay community of leading a “conspiracy” against Christianity by allying itself with Holocaust survivors.

The Bishop of Motherwell, Joseph Devine, says a “homosexual lobby” has aligned itself with minority groups, including Holocaust survivors, to gain persecuted status.

He said there was a “huge and well orchestrated conspiracy” taking place in the “gay movement”, which the Catholic Church neglected “at our peril”.

The bishop, who has previously spoken out against the Labour government’s support for civil partnerships, said the “lobby” was “ever present” at services for Holocaust Memorial Day. “The impression is that they have been equally persecuted,” he said.

In an attack on openly gay actor Sir Ian McKellen the bishop said: “I saw actor Ian McKellen being honoured for his work on behalf of homosexuals, when a century ago Oscar Wilde was locked up and put in jail.”

He made the comments during a lecture on “Christian faith and inconvenient questions” in Glasgow on Tuesday and has since stood by them, “These groups are defending their position, I am defending mine”, he said. “It is all about a lifestyle alien to the Christian tradition. There is a giant conspiracy against Christian values, an agenda here."

2. what horseshit.
But i guess the problem will take care of itself as the Catholic population ages. i play music in churches, and played for a Catholic church for many years and watched it get grayer weekly. Gee, i wonder if hate speech like this is related to that? hmmm

3. Is the Bishop aware that Gay were sent to the death camps by the Nazis?
Which means they were (and are) persecuted and certainly there must have been some Gays among the Holocaust survivors.

5. You have to wonder what the bishop is afraid of?
Is his god so weak and easily intimidated that a few gays can push him around?

7. Wingnut bishop
but he does have alot of followers in the Church. Remember the gays are the scapegoat for the sex abuse scandal. The "perfect society" (their term, seriously) that is the RCC would never do anything evil.

Over at the Catholic Answers board many are cheering him on for "enforcing the rules of the church". :puke:

8. Notice this slippery word "tradition"...
“It is all about a lifestyle alien to the Christian tradition."--Bishop Devine

Because, you know, Jesus said, "Love thy neighbor," "Do good to those who harm you," and "Turn the other cheek." He did not say, "except for gays." So Bishop Devine can't claim that Jesus hates gays, or that God forbids homosexuality--unless you go back into the Old Testament, which Jesus' new philosophy of love supercedes, according to Church teaching. No more "eye for an eye."

So, to avoid getting all tangled up in what Jesus actually said, Devine (what a name, eh?) conjures up "tradition." And that is quite risky as well. Christianity had a "tradition" of burning witches (and gays) at the stake for quite a while there, not to mention a "tradition" of pogroms against the Jews, throughout European history, from about the 5th Century AD, and the pogroms of Bishop Cyril of Alexandria, onward to modern times. They had a "tradition" of selling "indulgences" (time off your sentence in Purgatory) for cash payments or gifts of land to churchmen. They had a "tradition" of Popes having mistresses and fathering children, and living in disgusting splendor. They had an anti-science "tradition," which crippled the ability of the people in Middle Ages to fend off horrendous plagues--one of which killed a third of the population of Europe. They had all kinds of bad "traditions"--hating gays, and burning some gays at the stake, being just one of them.

So when does Christianity apologize for, and forever disavow these bad, bad "traditions," and start following the example of the man they purport to revere, and whom they claim IS God (--although what he actually said was, "The kingdom is within YOU"). Love thy neighbor. Do good to those who harm you. Turn the other cheek. It's very simple, what he said. Not all this bullshit politics and defense of "Christian values," and promulgation of Christianity's BAD "traditions."

9. Yup, that's it. It's the big bad homosexuals who are
picking on the poor helpless RCC.

Because you know, those gay folks have all the power and money and influence. And the RCC? They're a poor persecuted bunch, aren't they?

Unbelievable.

10. Apparently he missed the irony of his own remarks....
“I saw actor Ian McKellen being honoured for his work on behalf of homosexuals, when a century ago Oscar Wilde was locked up and put in jail.”

Yeah you twit, that was a century ago. And it was as stupid then as what you're saying now. Your mindset, and you yourself belong in the post-Victorian era because there is no room in the present or future for it, nor you.

You're right, its a conspiracy and its as old as time itself. Its a conspiracy to clear out the waste, debris and dead wood from a bygone era, so that fresh new growth can flourish. Using it as fertilizer. Which is what you're full of -- bullshit.

12. Why can't religious people see that fair reciprocal treatment of people promotes more kindness and
peace? If you sew hate you get hate in return. The OT is loaded with hate by the Jews so what did they get for it? Reciprocal hate. Jesus tried to stop this cycle, but it wasn't any fun and it just don't seem to sell very good. So the Christian followers went for the OT license to hate. Their sick to the core.

13. Damn those gays are efficient
I mean I remember that "gay agenda" funny about fitting in planning world domination in between spa visits, dancing and interior decoration (OK OK stereotypical, but it made the point well). Now they have to fit in plotting the downfall of the mother Church as well. I wonder if it will be happy hour at the martini bar or that sixth workout of the week that has to come off "the agenda" to fit that one in?

You'd think since I occasionally "bat for the other team" myself some of this ruthlessly efficient time management would rub off on me. Apparently you have to abjure women altogether to get that kind of horsepower. Darn.
