A Scott County pastor has been charged with stealing funds from his church, court records state.

William Joseph Moran Jr., pastor of Stamping Ground Baptist Church, was arraigned in Scott District Court Jan. 17 on a charge of theft by unlawful taking greater than $300, for allegedly stealing $900.50 from his church in October 2007, records state. Moran pleaded not guilty at the arraignment hearing and is scheduled to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing Feb. 21.

Moran declined comment, directing all questions to his attorney, John Cornett.

"We do not feel that anything criminal took place here," Cornett said. "We believe that this was an honest mistake that has since been corrected, and does not merit this sort of action."
