2. Those that feel persecuted, feel free to persecute others...
it is a human identity crisis.

Virtually all of this would go away, if anyone who truly believed in any of the major religions actually acted as those religions taught.

But we are stuck in a world where some "charismatic" individuals have decided that only their views are valid, and they have used what "they" consider important to profess hatred, bigotry and malevolence.

Virtually every religion has as one of it's tenets, "Treat others as you wish to be treated", (which, as far as can be determined came originally from Confucius), but virtually all religions, and secular aspects as well, have abandoned that simple rule.

6. I've been of the notion
that many of the world's leaders have spent 2 millennia trying to quash intelligence, exploration and rationale, and the truth. It has always been said that the victors re-write history to their own truths, and wise men know when a battle is not worth being fought. As logical, thinking progressives, the biggest battle is not that far off, and it will be a war of intellectuals fighting to restore order and truth, removing power from the clergy who once had the Holy Roman Empire on their resumes.

Let's face it: dinosaurs lived for millions of years without destroying the planet. Within the modern era of about a couple of hundred years out of 80-100 thousand years, we've managed to destroy quite a few natural resources, contributed to the extinction of many species, and mess up all our evolutionary progress along the way. Some people still act like our ancestral cousin which doesn't help our case of evolutionary progress, but we at least know who they are. Hopefully they will lose the influence they have right now and we can move forward again--it's about all we can do is wait.

15. A look at the history should convince you relations between the so-called "Holy Roman Empire"
and the medieval church were often complicated and contentious

3. of course because "persecuted" to them
means not being able to tell everybody what to do think, say, how to live. Plus the fact that ooh we are free to criticize their precious beliefs. Thats persecution. Everybody knows they are perfect and above critique.
American Taliban is really an excellent name for them. Because I truly believe, given the opportunity, these people would run the country the way the Taliban used to run Afghanistan.

And btw, maybe they ought to talk to groups like gays, blacks, Jews, ATHEISTS, to find out what persecution REALLY is.
Effing morons. Very few things get me madder than that stupidity.:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

9. American Taliban was beginning to stick to them
and then John Walker Lindh turned up to claim the title for himself - or have it stuck to him by the MSM. How conveinient that was.

4. I'm sick and tired of whiny Christians.
I'm Christian, and I know darn well that I'm not persecuted. I may get a bit miffed from time to time at the snark here, but it's just a freakin' website, not the government coming to take away my children or put me in the lion pit. Heck, if anything, I'm part of the least persecuted group in America. Pagans have it far worse, and atheists have a much harder time, too. Their preachers are just trying to whip up emotional fervor, that's all.

7. Oh I know...
How right you are. I grew up in a fundie church and have been to several different ones and persecution is a common theme. Paranoia is rampant. :hide:

why would they be surprised? Jesus warned any who would follow him not to expect an easy time of things...

11. Persecution
To those people, not getting their way 100% of the time = Persecution. Fundamentalists have been pushing that notion for quite some time. It's not flying, however.

12. Welcome to DU, SecularNATION!
I agree with you. So long as they cannot do as they please with public policy, then they will claim that they are being persecuted. They fail to recognize, however, that freedom of religion is in place to protect minority views.

:hi:

13. I worked with a fundi on a project some time ago...
and we were discussing his kid, who he said was being "persecuted" in high school for her anti-abortion beliefs. I questioned him on his use of the word "persecution" and over the course of the discussion he admitted that the use of the word "persecution" might be over the top and he backed down. These people like to use inflammatory words but when challenged they will, for the most part, back down. The ones who want to make their point no matter what will walk away from the argument without comment and try to find an easier mark.
